'Happy Gilmore 2' Smashed This Netflix Record With Its Debut

The highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2 just earned Netflix its biggest release to date. The Adam Sandler-led sequel, which packed innumerable celebrity cameos throughout its runtime, amassed an impressive 46.7 million views in its first weekend on the streamer, making it both the biggest opening weekend in the United States for a Netflix original, as well as the best for one of Sandler's films on the streaming platform. It's no surprise given the hype that has surrounded the movie in the weeks leading up to its release, thanks, of course, to the nostalgic factor, in addition to the casting of Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, and more surprise cameos. Julie Bowen made a welcome but controversial return, while Sandler's daughters and wife all made appearances, too. He also included an emotional tribute to the late Cameron Boyce, who played his son in the Grown Ups franchise. Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz and more can also be seen on screen, as well as a few surprise shots of Ed Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs legend's father. Happy Gilmore 2 premiered on July 25, and also drove 11.4 million views for the original film during the week of July 21 to July 27, according to Variety, enjoying two consecutive weeks on the global top 10 list.
