Flag Raising, Holi Celebration Ushers In Pride Month In Doylestown
DOYLESTOWN, PA — To kickoff off Pride Month in Doylestown, Progressive Pride flags were hoisted into place over the weekend in the courtyard of the Bucks County Administration building and at Broad Commons Park at the Doylestown Borough Hall.Throughout June, the flags will fly above the Bucks County seat as the LGTBQ+ community celebrates the town's diverse community.The kickoff was organized by Discover Doylestown, Doylestown Pride, Doylestown Borough and the Rainbow Room and launches a month-long celebration of gay, transgender and lesbian pride with movies at the County Theatre, visiting authors at the Doylestown Bookshop and music, all culminating with a Pride Festival at the end of the month.Raising the Progressive Pride Flag at the Bucks County Administration Center(Photographs by Jeff Werner)State Rep. Tim Brennan gets into the action tossing colored powder.After raising the flag above the county’s administration building, Desis Of Doylestown joined with the LGBTQ+ community this year for a Holi celebration as members of the LGBTQ+ community joined Desis Of Doylestown in splashing each other with a rainbow of color. A group of volunteers then carried a second Progressive Pride flag from Court and Main to Broad Commons Park where it was raised in front of the Doylestown Borough Hall.At the Doylestown Borough Hall, Mayor Noni West read from a proclamation designating June as Pride Month in the borough and shared with the gathering a packed schedule of events that will be taking place throughout June.Doylestown Borough Mayor Noni West reads from the proclamation.The Progressive Pride Flag arrives at the Doylestown Borough Hall.The month ahead is packed with events and activities including two movies at the County Theatre, guest LGBTQ+ authors at the Doylestown Bookshop, a music celebration, and more all culminating with the biggest Pride Block Party to date, said Discover Doylestown's Michael Kendrick.“We’ve expanded from 38 to 45 vendors this year,” said Kendrick. “And even with that, we had to turn people away. We had 80 applicants,” he said. “We’ll also have three drag queens joining the fun.”The month-long celebration launches on June 13 with a pop-up event, "The Michener Celebrates Pride," from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Michener Art Museum. The public is invited to celebrate pride at the Michener with a fun life-drawing event. Drag performers will pose and interact with participants. All materials are provided for the program, but participants are welcome to bring their drawing materials and sketchbooks if desired. Adults ages 21 and up are welcome to attend these unique workshops, appropriate for beginners and experienced artists alike. Self-expression, experimentation, and fun are the focus. Click here to register.Other highlights include:Pride Music Day 2024, organized in partnership with Picnics on Pine, takes place on Saturday, June 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Doors for the show will open at 4:30 p.m. Picnic spots are first come first serve. Attendees must provide their own chairs and blankets for picnicking. Bring what you need to comfortably enjoy a picnic without obstructing the view. Pride Music Day is a rain-or-shine event. No refunds will be given. The Rainbow Room hosts Queer Youth Open Mic on June 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tileworks. Celebrating Queer Youth Art & Performance, the event is free, but donations are appreciated. Bring a blanket, chairs, snacks, friends, family, love, pride, and a commitment to a world that celebrates, protects and fights for LGBTQ+ youth and art. The event also features a night for the entire community. The event is cancelled in the event of rain.The Pride Month Block Party takes place on June 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on East State Street between Pine and Main Streets in Doylestown. The event will includenon-profit organizations, businesses, live entertainment, and much more.
