OT7 Championship recruiting intel: Day 1
TAMPA – The OT7 Championship has quickly become the top event of the summer and after having it in Las Vegas and Los Angeles the first two seasons, it has moved to Tampa in 2024. Some of the top recruits in the country are competing this week and On3’s Chad Simmons had the latest recruiting intel after Thursday night’s Adidas Throwdown kicked things off and here are some notes from day one on Friday.
5-star WR Dallas Wilson
The buzz: Tampa (Fla.) Tech five-star wide receiver Dallas Wilson is committed to Oregon. He will be back at Oregon on June 21 for his official visit and he is still “feeling good” about the Ducks. He was supposed to be at Miami this weekend for an official visit and that will either happen in between his visit to Florida (June 14) and Oregon or push it to the fall. All three in-state schools are in this. Florida State is serious with Wilson. Miami is too. Florida is in this and will look to make a move next weekend.
5-star WR Jaime Ffrench
The buzz: Texas had the momentum entering official visits, and the Longhorns are still high on his list, but LSU made a move for Jaime Ffrench last weekend. The five-star wide receiver out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin likes the LSU offense, he has a strong relationship with Cortez Hankton, and the word is LSU moved up his list significantly. Ffrench still has to finish out of his official visits to Miami, Tennessee and Texas this summer, but LSU made a strong impression last weekend. Ohio State is not going away either. There is still communication and a lot can happen between now and the time Ffrench commits on Aug. 30.
4-star SAF Anquon Fegans
The buzz: Anquon Fegans is set to commit on July 29 and he is down to Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and LSU. He has taken an official visit to Clemson and he is set to visit Georgia next weekend, then LSU on June 21. Auburn had him on campus earlier this week for a team 7-on-7 and he could take an official visit during the season. The Tigers have the buzz for the Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson four-star safety. They landed his brother Tre’quon Fegans out of the Transfer Portal and Hugh Freeze has a real chance to add another Fegans next month.
4-star SAF Jordan Young
The buzz: Jordan Young will not make a decision until October, but the official visits this summer are very important. Clemson set the bar high last weekend and the Tigers are at or near the top of his list. Florida State will host him on an official visit next weekend and he is high on the Seminoles as well. Michigan got Young on campus late in the spring and have risen up his list. Young will be in Ann Arbor on June 21. NC State is an in-state program that is doing a great job recruiting the four-star safety at Monroe (N.C.) and he will be in Raleigh on June 19.
4-star QB Ty Hawkins
The buzz: Ty Hawkins is committed to TCU, and the four-star quarterback will be hard to flip, but he is in communication with Oregon and SMU. He is planning to visit both at some point. Before committing to the Horned Frogs, Hawkins visited SMU three times. Hawkins has talked with Oregon about visiting the last week in July and taking an official visit during the season. Oregon’s offensive coordinator Will Stein offered Hawkins when he was a freshman while coaching at UTSA. Hawkins will be one to track in the coming months.
4-star CB Chris Ewald
The buzz: Chris Ewald is down to Georgia and Miami with a commitment date set for June 27. He will visit Miami on June 14, then Georgia on June 21. Miami is in a good position to keep the Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star cornerback at home. We will see if Georgia can change that in the coming weeks.
4-star CB Gregory Thomas
The buzz: Florida State remains the team to beat for Gregory Thomas. The staff has connected with Thomas and the continue to set the pace. Clemson showed him a lot last weekend, but the Seminoles could be tough to beat. Thomas has an official visit to Florida State on June 21.
4-star TE Vander Ploog
The buzz: Vander Ploog is pushing toward a summer commitment. Washington is the team in the best position with an official visit on June 21. He worked out at Oregon this week and there is conversation between him and the Ducks, but no offer yet. The staff at Washington, who had him on campus for an official visit in May is setting the pace. Arizona State and SMU are others in the mix and he has taken official visits to both schools.
