Johan Pilestedt Explains Helldivers 2 and Arrowhead’s Early Beginnings and How the Titles Came to Be
Helldivers 2, the co-op shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, has been a tremendous success and garnered a large gaming community unlike any other game. The game has also been subject to controversy, but it has found its way back to players as a fun and exciting game.
The title has sold 12 million units in its first 12 weeks and has become PlayStation’s fastest-selling video game ever, putting its success in perspective. But like everything, Helldivers 2 and developer Arrowhead have an origin story, and CEO Johan Pilestedt has shed some light on this.
Helldivers 2 CEO Shares the Background of Arrowhead Game Studios
Helldivers 2 CEO shares the origin story of the game and studio.
In an interview with PlayStation, CEO Johan Pilestedt shared the beginnings of the studio and how the name of the studio came to be. Pilestedt said that there were a lot of names thrown around when a name was being finalized for the studio, but the name “Arrowhead” was the one that stuck “without much competition.”

He said that the name came out of two ideas, one from his last name, which, when translated to English, means “arrow stead,” and also that the name sounds like a “serious company,” also adding, “Tip of the arrow. Cutting edge.” He mentioned that the logo of the company changes that meaning to something “dumber,” and that’s actually clever.
Pilestedt said that the company was named “Arrowhead Game Studios,” plural, as a precaution to avoid any change in the game if someday the developer would have more than one studio. He also said that the name reminds him of the beginnings. He stated:
Now, the name stands as a reminder of our student beginnings, when we were five people in a small room on the LTU campus. Even the logo hasn’t changed much since then.
Pilestedt said the team is still going after the dream they had right at the beginning: “to change the games industry with the power of fantasy-first co-op games.” This is something that can be seen in the daily activities of the developer, as it improves the title and caters to all kinds of players.
Helldivers 2 Title for the Game Also Has an Exciting Origin
The game title came up with a mix of two phrases.
When asked about the title’s origins, Pilestedt said that it was derived from two phrases, “war is hell” and “diving into war,” which became Helldivers 2. He added that the team wanted a name for the game that would reflect the in-game activities and what players do in the game.
SUGGESTEDNew Helldivers 2 Petition Actually has a Chance to Succeed, and Unlike the Xbox One, There’s a Chance This’ll Succeed with the Will of the People
He also said that he always wanted to do something with the name of the World War II-era Curtiss SB2C “Helldiver” dive bomber. Pilestedt added that the name fits perfectly with the game and remained the same throughout all the pitches and to the final product.
Pilestedt concluded by saying that the developer wanted the name “Helldivers” to “evoke the feeling of going up against insurmountable odds and that you’ll probably die,” and it has successfully done so. The community of the game is one of the biggest ever in the industry, and it continues to grow.
