Community Rallies to Aid Spirit Horse Stables in Spring Hill After Tornado Injures 8 Horses
A tornado's wrath leaves a Tennessee stable in shambles, as eight of twenty-three horses suffered injuries when a deadly vortex struck Spirit Horse Stables in Spring Hill on May 8. According to a report by WSMV, stable owner Hallie Powell confirmed the extent of the damage, stating "All the pastures were lost." She expressed relief that none of the horses, dogs, or people on the property were lost to the storm.
In the wake of the disaster, neighbors and volunteers provided much-needed assistance. A GoFundMe has been initiated to garner support for the stable, seeking donations for horse supplies and heavy machinery to clear the debris-laden grounds. On a heartwrenching note, an elderly equine named Sky was among the wounded, sustaining "a severe cut to his eye and across his midsection," as Spirit Horse Stables' family friend Alexus Tallman recounted, as per WKRN.
The tempest uprooted more than just trees; it displaced horses and demolished the only shelter they knew. Horse Plus Humane Society has offered refuge to the injured stable mates during their recovery. Chandra Davis, shelter manager at Horse Plus, emphasized the emotional rigors of rebuilding after such a natural disaster, noting the stable's significant loss and the expectedly high veterinary bills, as reported by WKRN.
Community spirit, however, remains unbroken – if not fortified by the calamity. Resilient volunteers surged forth through the muddied chaos, arms laden with hay bales to feed the horses stranded by fallen trees. "The fact that we’re not finding any deceased horses here on site is I think just a testimony to the horses themselves, horses are very smart animals," Tawnee Preisner of Horse Plus Humane Society said, per NewsChannel 5. Preisner also sheds light on the horses' intelligent nature and the necessity of keeping them together as a herd during such traumatic events.
The resilience and unity displayed may bring a glimmer of hope to those like Tallman, who said, according to NewsChannel 5, "I’ve been here since I was a kid and I watched them build this 20-something years ago from nothing but dirt so now this is insane it’s basically taking it back to the roots ya know when they put in so much work." The stable owners, huddled in their storm shelter with their dogs during the catastrophic event, were thankful for their lives while still reeling from shock. Those wishing to support the recovery efforts for Spirit Horse Stables can find their GoFundMe page through relevant links and community outreach.
