Tavaris Dice Q&A: ‘Really solid’ with Auburn, Florida pushing hard, and more
Auburn 4-star offensive line commit Tavaris “TJ” Dice spoke with On3’s Keith Niebuhr on Friday. Dice went into a deep dive of his recruitment, saying that Auburn and Florida are pretty close at this time. Other schools like Florida State and potentially Georgia are in the mix as well. Dice was clear that his commitment is with Auburn, but other schools continue to push–Florida being one of the main contenders.
Committed to Auburn, but Florida not giving up
Q: What is the best thing about Auburn in your opinion?
DICE: “Really, I like what is going on with how the offensive line is fixing to operate. You have a left tackle that’s leaving, a left guard, and a right tackle that is leaving. If I go down there and do what I have to do, stay locked in on development, I feel like I can be in there.”
Q: What does it mean that Florida has not given up on you?
DICE: “It means a lot because it shows me they care, that I am a pretty solid kid for them. They still reach out to my family to this day, they let them know everything they feel about me.”
Q: Thoughts on Coach Lucas at Florida?
DICE: “Man, Coach Chad (Lucas), he is an excellent person. (Lucas) is always reaching out and making sure I am good. He has always been there since the start of this recruitment with Florida. He reaches out to my family, makes sure we’re doing ok inside school and outside of school–He shows me around campus, shows my family around campus.”
Q: What does your family think of Florida and Coach Napier?
DICE: “I live with my grandma and mom and they love him. Like I said, Florida, they’re like a cultural school.”
Q: What is the best thing about Florida and do they have a shot with you?
DICE: “Yes, they do. Because, the way they recruit me. I see Coach Napier, he’s making a big impact toward the campus and the program. Going down there they have all of those offensive line coaches and assistants. You’re going to get work and get developed.”
Q: How solid are you in your Auburn commitment? How tough will it be to flip you?
DICE: “It’s pretty solid right now, but one thing Florida told me, Coach Decoster, he was down here just a couple days ago. I talk to Coach Sale, too and the head coach texts me and my family in a group chat. Florida told me a little while back when I committed that they would fight until the end and do whatever it takes. They love me and I am at the top of their board.”
Head to head: Florida vs. Auburn
Q: What separated the two schools in the first place?
DICE: “It’s like, when I go to those games, how the staff treats me, how the staff treats my family, whoever I bring down there. It feels like I already go there. Like I am enrolled but just not playing yet. The fans, they reach out on everything, it is just amazing. When I go to Florida, same thing. I go down there, the staff greets me, they open the doors, I know everybody.”
Q: Is Florida your No. 2 school behind Auburn?
DICE: “Yes.. I am solid with Auburn, I am really solid with Auburn right now, but Florida is still a top contender.”
Q: Is there anything different about Auburn’s and Florida’s pitches?
DICE: “I feel like it is different. Every time I go to both places it is a different thing I feel. When I go to Auburn, I feel like I am at home. When I go to Florida I feel like I am at home, too. This recruitment, it’s been really a hard thing to go through and things like that. I have been paving the way, keeping my head straight and focused on what it needs to be on.”
Q: When are your official visits?
DICE: “Florida official – June 14-16, AUBURN – (June) 7-9. I’m still making that schedule but I am pretty sure I will still take one more.”
Q: How big are the official visits for you?
DICE: “I feel like it is pretty big. I just want them to make sure they let me know everything. One thing about me, I don’t always like to hear the good stuff about me, I want to know the real about everything. I want to know what I can be better at.”
Q: Does Coach Sale at Florida coach you that way?
DICE: “Oh for sure, when he came down here he told me things like I need to get lower on blocks. He also told me my footwork is really good, like he’s never seen.”
Q: What about Coach Thornton at Auburn?
DICE: “Oh yeah, for sure, Coach Thornton, he helps me out with my stance and everything. He is trying to develop me and I am not even there yet. That little bit of help, I already know how it’s going to be when I get there.”
Q: You committed to Auburn for a reason.. what gives them the edge?
DICE: “Really, I don’t even know.. To be honest, I felt better there, I felt at home.”
