Colin Jost’s Retelling of His First Date With Scarlett Johansson Is as Sweet as It Gets
Whether you think about it a lot or not, everyone has their “One True Pairing” in Hollywood. Whether it’s Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, or Zendaya and Tom Holland, everyone has the couple they’ll always root for. For many, that’s Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost – an unexpected couple who now has us swooning everytime they share glimpses of their life.
In a new interview with The New York Times, for example, the Saturday Night Live star gushed about his wife (they’ve been married since 2020), and remembered the first time they met back in 2013. At the time, Johansson was hosting the show for the first time while Jost, who only worked as a writer at the time, was in his first year at 30 Rock.
“My first year as a writer, I wasn’t like, ‘I should probably ask one of the hosts out,’” he told the outlet. “I was like, ‘Am I going to have a job this year?’”
A few years later, Jost and Johansson met again when she returned to host in 2017.
“I asked her out after the host dinner that we have on Tuesday nights,” the Weekend Update host remembered. “I was just like, ‘You want to go grab a drink?’ Then we had drinks until, like, 4 in the morning. It was great.”
“It was not good for my writing, but it was good for my future marriage,” he joked. We you know, you know, right?

Also in the interview, Jost opened up about what made him fall in love with Johansson – and it might be even sweeter than their first date.
“I think part of the reason I fell in love with her is she’s a great mom,” he said. As a reminder, Johansson shares 9-year-old daughter Rosie with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac. She also shares son Cosmo, 2, with Jost.
“I’ve known Rose, my stepdaughter, since she was 2. It’s weird. You get to actually preview someone as a mom,” Jost said.
He also admitted that seeing a big star like Johansson doing “normal stuff” also had his heart skipping a beat. “She goes to the supermarket. She’s just very good at wearing a hat and she keeps moving,” Jost gushed. “She is able to stay a little under the radar, but she’s able to do all these everyday things and enjoy them, too.” This in-love-Colin might be our favorite yet!
