96 days until Notre Dame football: A stat reached for the first time since 1996
Jaden Greathouse led all Notre Dame wide receivers with 5 touchdown catches in 2023. Two of them came in the season-opener against Navy in Dublin, Ireland, and that was enough to match a feat that hadn’t been achieved by any Fighting Irish players in nearly three decades.
Greathouse became the first Notre Dame wide receiver since 1996 to score two touchdowns in a season debut, per ND Athletics. Also since 1996, the only Irish wideout to have more touchdown receptions as a freshman was Michael Floyd with 7 in 2008.

It was still a “what could have been” type of season for Greathouse. He recorded at least 2 catches in the first five games of his career. Then he went without a single catch in four straight appearances. He did not suit up at all against Duke because of a hamstring injury.
It took Notre Dame’s second bye week of the season in the second weekend of November for Greathouse to finally start feeling like himself again. He has 6 catches for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns in the final three games of the year.
When Greathouse was reeling, former walk-on Jordan Faison stepped into his position in the slot an outshined him to a degree. Faison caught 19 passes for 322 yards and 4 touchdowns in seven games.
There’s going to be a ying and yang kind of element to that duo’s situation as Notre Dame’s top two options in the slot. Faison was busy this spring starting for the defending national champion Fighting Irish lacrosse team. Greathouse was healthy, meanwhile, and putting together a productive month on the practice field. Faison hardly took any reps on the gridiron because of lacrosse.
Entering the summer, it’s hard to see anyone other than Greathouse starting in the slot against Texas A&M on Aug. 31. We know what he’s capable of in the first game of a season, too. But we also know what Faison is capable of, period. So it’s hard to see him not getting his fair share of opportunities from the start as well. Lacrosse won’t be taking up his time come fall camp.
We’ll end this how we started it, though. Greathouse, when healthy, is a history maker. He’s been focused on healing and getting stronger since the season ended, so look out for No. 19.
