Auburn position unit ranking: No. 4, Tight ends
Auburn is more than likely done in the transfer portal and gearing up to enter the fall with the roster being full despite anything unforeseen. Auburn Live is ranking the position units on the team from least to greatest. The tight ends come in at No. 4 and we will state our case why. Also, we have added overall ratings predictions for the new EA Sports College Football game.
To avoid confusion, this is the opinion of Auburn Live analyst Cole Pinkston. This ranking is based on the position units as a whole, not just at the starters and key rotational pieces. It is also based solely on the 2024 season outlook and not a future outlook of the position unit.
Potential starter
— Rivaldo Fairweather – Fairweather is listed as a tight end, and will certainly have some tight end/H-back duties. However, he is a “flex” tight end–one who can line up anywhere in the formation and act as a skill player. He is the main guy for that role.
— Luke Deal – Deal is the traditional in-line tight end. He will line up on the line of scrimmage and sometimes as an H-back primarily used for blocking. He has been a mainstay in the lineup for Auburn for a while now.
First off the bench
— Brandon Frazier – Frazier is somewhat in between Deal and Fairweather when it comes to his role. He can be a receiver, but can also do what Deal does. Auburn started using him more as a receiving threat a year ago. Frazier had 7 catches, 73 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
Reserve
— Micah Riley – Riley should play several snaps, but we think he is behind Frazier just slightly for now. Riley is similar to Frazier in that he can do both duties. He will serve in a rotational role.
— Rico Walker – Walker, a recent transfer from Maryland, has more of an H-back skillset. He is meant more for blocking in space or as a lead. He can also be effective as a pass-catcher.
EA Football 25 rankings
**Our prediction on what the top three in this room will be ranked on the new EA Sports College Football game..
— Rivaldo Fairweather – 83 overall
— Luke Deal – 80 overall
— Brandon Frazier – 73 overall
Reason for ranking
The tight end group has looked the same for a long time. Sometimes, this is not ideal, but in this case, the players here have been consistent in the last few years. Then, the room added a weapon in Rivaldo Fairweather. That took this room from slightly above average to fairly dynamic.
Fairweather, by himself, is important to this unit’s ranking on the team for us. He could have an even bigger season as a pass-catcher and do-it-all player in the offense.
Deal is an unsung hero for Auburn’s running game. Go back to a random big run play for Auburn in the past 2-3 years and there is a good chance Deal was out in front of it. He is consistent and that won’t change in 2024.
The other pieces are solid. No one is a superstar, but all do good things separately. Walker is still an unknown commodity, but has an interesting skillset. Frazier proved to have some playmaking ability while Riley has a mean streak that can be good as an open field blocker.
The tight end room for Auburn is full of veterans and consistency. There’s no reason why they should not be in the top half of the position units at this time.
