Commitment Impact: What do Penn State fans need to know about new running back commit Jabree Wallace-Coleman?
It didn’t take long for Penn State to add another running back to its class. Following Alvin Henderson’s decision earlier this week to flip his commitment to Auburn, the Nittany Lions needed just over 24 hours to fill his spot, locking up a commitment Saturday night from Philadelphia native Jabree Wallace-Coleman.
What do Penn State fans need to know about the newest four-star prospect from Imhotep Charter to join the class? We break it down below.
1. How it started
Penn State extended an offer to Wallace-Coleman shortly after his freshman season in December 2021. At the time, assistant coach Terry Smith oversaw recruiting in Philadelphia, but of course running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider also had a hand in getting this recruitment up and running. Deion Barnes now oversees recruiting throughout the city of Philadelphia, while recruiting coordinator Kenny Sanders also played a role.
2. Which schools were considered?
Wallace-Coleman made an early commitment to Georgia back in July 2022. He held firm with that decision for well over a year, only to announce this past December that he was opening up his recruitment. He totaled more than 20 offers over the course of his recruitment. Michigan, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas A&M were among the more notable schools to offer.
3. Path to Penn State
Throughout his recruitment, Wallace-Coleman took four visits to Penn State. He visited once before committing to Georgia in April 2022, then returned this past season to watch the season opener against West Virginia with a few of his teammates from Imhotep Charter. After opening up his recruitment again, Wallace-Coleman attended a junior day at Penn State this past January before eventually taking his official visit this weekend.
Back in May, Wallace-Coleman told BWI that Penn State and North Carolina were the two schools he had locked in official visits with. He was also considering an official visit to Michigan State this month but didn’t end up making the trip.
4. Rankings and Accolades
Wallace-Coleman holds a four-star rating at three of the four major recruiting sites. That makes him a four-star prospect in On3’s Industry Rankings, which combines 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN with On3 for a cumulative grade. The Industry Rankings have him at No. 213 nationally, 13th overall at running back and No. 6 in Pennsylvania for his class. On3’s rankings have him a bit higher at No. 153 overall and No. 10 nationally at running back.
5. What has he said about Penn State?
“I have a great relationship with Coach [Ja’Juan] Seider and Coach Deion [Barnes],” Wallace-Coleman said. “Also, whenever I’ve been up there, I talk to Coach [James] Franklin a lot. He gives me good vibes. But they really try to build trust and keep in communication with me. They check in with me a lot and are always checking on me. I think with them, it’s bigger than football.”
