Route 146, 146A traffic pattern to change Friday night
NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Drivers heading through the Route 146 interchange will notice a new traffic pattern beginning Friday night.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) said that as part of a "total redesign of this intersection to make it safer and more efficient," they will close the turnaround that connects Route 146 to Route 146A in North Smithfield.
Southbound travelers on Route 146 will encounter a new left-hand turnoff to Route 146A North about a quarter-mile sooner.
To access Route 146 North, drivers will be directed to head north on Route 146A until Smithfield Road, then turn left on Greenville Avenue before taking the on-ramp. RIDOT said that detour will be in place until spring, when they're scheduled to open a new portion of the Route 146/Route 146A interchange.
These changes are part of the $196 million Route 146 Project. According to RIDOT, they are "greatly needed improvements" to improve safety and reduce congestion.
The work includes replacing or repairing five bridges along the corridor, repaving the roadways, and building a new flyover bridge to carry traffic over Sayles Hill Road.
