SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Thanks to Patch reader Dawn Lorenzen for sending in this picture of a Yellow Globe Lily. She was hiking April 28 at Lake Sonoma when she spotted the wildflower and cleverly used selfie mode to capture an image of the lily's face.Having recently published a photograph of the rare Mt. Diablo Globe Lily we were curious if this might also be one. We reached out to Jenni Shaw, curator of education for Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, an expert on all things Mount Diablo.According to Shaw, the flower pictured at Lake Sonoma is a Yellow Globe Lily."The ones found in Sonoma County are genetically different than the ones found on Mount Diablo," Shaw said in an email to Patch. "They are part of the larger globe lily family."The scientific name for the Mount Diablo Globe Lily is Calochortus pulchellus, while the Yellow Globe Lily, visually similar, is Calochortus amabilis, she said. Both flowers are in the larger Liliaceae family."Despite being visually similar, the Mount Diablo Globe Lily is incredibly rare," Shaw said. "It only grows on Mount Diablo and the surrounding foothills, and only on the Western Slope."Here is a picture of a Mt.
