The new £20million BBC reality show has been billed as ‘better than The Traitors’
Destination X is a show based on a Belgian series, which sees contestants sent to a random destination before they have to try and work out where they are.
They all travel on a blacked out bus and will have to take on challenges and games along the way which will give them clues as to where they are.
At the end of each episode the contestant who places an X on the map the furthest away from their actual destination will be sent packing.
A source said: “Destination X is going to be massive for the BBC and they wanted a familiar face to take it on.
“Rob is very well liked and is incredibly funny, so he seemed the ideal candidate to present the show.
“Filming begins in the mystery location this week.”
The Beeb has invested £20million on the adventure show and is hoping the series will be “better than The Traitors“.
BBC’s director of unscripted programming, Kate Phillips, described the popular international series as innovative, intelligent and addictive, with ‘countless red herrings’ and clues allowing the audience at home to play along.
She explained Destination X “feels very unique and distinctive”, and noted that the BBC had “learned from The Traitors” hugely.
She told The Time “the roundtables provide those real heart-in-mouth moments which explore human psychology and how people behave and react to each other”.
Rob was spotted reuniting with his Gavin and Stacey co-stars last month ahead of the final Christmas special.
The Welsh actor, who plays Uncle Bryn on the beloved BBC series and now hosts Would I Lie To You?, shared a picture with co-star and show creator Ruth Jones on Instagram to mark a major show moment.
Gavin and Stacey was last seen on screen in 2019 for what was originally billed as a one-off Christmas episode.
The special was the first time we had an update on the Essex/Welsh family since 2009 when the series originally ended.
In May this year, creators James Corden and Ruth confirmed with a photograph that fans will finally get their wish, but noted this would be the last ever episode of the comedy juggernaut.
The new BBC show Destination X is expected to hit UK screens later in 2024.
