The status, which could only be used for players with less than two years of experience in the league, meant he couldn’t negotiate with any other NFL team in free agency.
However, the official daily transaction report didn’t mention the defensive lineman’s return until Thursday, May 30.
Herring, 26, signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2021.
But he had to wait to make his debut until 2022 because of a torn ACL he suffered at the end of his college football career.
The Georgia native played 163 defensive snaps during the 2023 regular season, logging 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
He registered another four tackles over 50 defensive snaps in four postseason appearances for Kansas City, who eventually won Super Bowl LVIII.
Herring could be seen embracing his crying mom in touching scenes during victory celebrations.
The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 23-20 at Allegiant Stadium in February, defending their championship.
They will have a chance to complete a first-ever Super Bowl three-peat in 2024.
Kansas City has made a number of notable roster additions this offseason.
Those include wide receiver Marquise Brown and quarterback Carson Wentz.
The Chiefs also drafted wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, who set a new 40-yard dash scouting combine record at 4.21 seconds earlier this year.
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh seems to be aware of just how difficult it will be to stop Kansas City again next season.
Harbaugh recently joked he would love to see Travis Kelce marry Taylor Swift and retire from the gridiron to focus on family life so the Chiefs have one less weapon to rely on.
“I hope they get married,” he told US Weekly.
“I hope they have a bunch of kids.
“Heck, maybe he’ll get ready to retire here pretty soon to pursue that family aspect of his life.
“I would encourage that.”
Harbaugh added he’s “rooting for” Taylor and Travis and that their romance is “the coolest thing ever.”
The Chiefs beat the Ravens in the AFC Championship game last season.
