To continue the Crazy Rich Asians saga, Jon M. Chu is bringing the popular book series to television.
Following the news that Max is developing a Crazy Rich Asians TV show, Chu, who directed the 2018 movie, explained why the story had to move to the small screen.
“We needed more real estate. That was the reality,” Chu told The Hollywood Reporter. “The landscape allowed us to use all the characters.”
Chu said the TV show does not replace plans to make another movie, though he could not share any details.
“I don’t know if it’s in lieu of a sequel, but it felt clear that every character we wanted to explore needed more room, and just a movie wasn’t doing it for us,” Chu added. “We got to bring Adele back into the fold, and so we’re starting this now. It’s going to be fun.”

Who is involved with Jon M. Chu in the Crazy Rich Asians TV show?
Last week, Max announced plans to develop a TV show based on Crazy Rich Asians. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 movie, will be the showrunner and executive producer. Chu is set to be an executive producer on the TV show.
The show is based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel Crazy Rich Asians and its two sequels, 2015’s China Rich Girlfriend and 2017’s Rich People Problems. Kwan will executive produce the show for Warner Bros. Television.
It is unknown if the movie’s original cast will reprise their roles for the TV show.
The feature film adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians stars Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, an NYU professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding), for his best friend’s wedding. Shortly after arriving, Rachel learns Nick comes from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families.
Released in August 2018, Crazy Rich Asians was a critical and commercial hit. The rom-com grossed $239 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. The movie was nominated for two Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
A sequel to the movie is still in development, with Amy Wang penning the latest draft.
