Five things: How Dalton Knapp makes Kansas State better
.) The first defensive end commit of the Kansas State class is Dalton Knapp of Grapevine, Texas. He attends All Saints Episcopal School in the Lone Star State. The Wildcats will look to address the position a little more than they did a year ago when they didn’t add a defensive end at all. Of course that was following the group that consisted of Chiddi Obiazor, Ryan Davis and Jordan Allen. Knapp’s decision will also steer K-State away from Triston Abram. Instead, they’ll focus more on strong-side defensive end options like Shawn Hammerbeck and Kade Pietrzak.
.) Knapp didn’t have a flood of other schools pursuing him, but he did cancel a few other trips while committing to Kansas State. A Kansas visit was on the docket, and he didn’t make the voyage to Lawrence. Texas Tech wanted him to check out Lubbock as well, and that possibility was scratched. Boise State was another school chasing him.
.) His offer from K-State is still not even a month old. Buddy Wyatt pulled the trigger and extended him a scholarship on May 31 soon after observing him at a satellite camp in the state of Texas (via video from the assistant that was in attendance – Brian Lepak). Knapp was impressive enough to make the Kansas State assistants budge. And Knapp wasted little time in jumping on the opportunity. He immediately scheduled an official visit to Manhattan for the following weekend.
.) I hope I am very wrong, and I very could well be, and that’s a good thing. But I do have my reservations about how Knapp translates to the Power Four level. He’s a little on the light side at under 220 pounds. He has time for that to spike up and he could play at K-State at 240-245 pounds. I don’t see him getting any heavier than that. But that’s doable on the weak-side. There’s also a chance it doesn’t work out even at that weight or he struggles to even reach that mark. We’ll see. The best case scenario is him playing around 255 pounds and being a long, quick menace off the edge.
.) Because of the weight needing to be addressed, it won’t be until at least year two (and probably later) that Knapp leaves his mark on the Kansas State program.
