Melania Trump's Memoir Book Cover Seems to Mirror Her Time as First Lady

Melania Trump’s memoir launch is still over a month away, but she’s already teasing the cover of her book, Melania — and it’s quite controversial. The all-black cover with stark white text looks very similar to the Chanel Catwalk book by Patrick Mauriès. While that comparison is drawing debate on social media, it’s a cover that doesn’t say much.
When Melania was First Lady of the United States, she was an enigma. She moved into the White House months after Donald Trump was inaugurated in 2017 so their son, Barron, could finish the school year in New York City. The decision was not only costly to taxpayers, but it also didn’t allow her to settle into her role in a timely fashion. Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, explained to SheKnows in 2023 that Melania was essentially “unknowable” in the position because she didn’t let the public in on any level.
Our lives are shaped by our experiences, challenges, and achievements. For the first time, I share my journey with you, in my new memoir, Melania. Pre-Order Now: https://t.co/1xspwAqGiK pic.twitter.com/8E4xP2y4Fc— MELANIA TRUMP (@MELANIATRUMP) August 25, 2024
“Melania Trump revolutionized it in an unusual way because she didn’t move into the White House right away,” Brower says. “She didn’t do what we all wanted. She didn’t seem to care about making the public like her. It was bizarre.” Brower added, “I always felt that she didn’t want to be the first lady, and she was unapologetic about it. She wasn’t interested in doing what we expected of her.” That also seems to be reflected in her memoir cover. What is the public learning about Melania with cold black-and-white graphics? There’s no warm and fuzzy image inviting readers to dive into the book.

It’s exactly the way Melania wants it though. “From her point of view and her friends’ point of view, she’s been through a lot, and she’s come out a strong independent woman,” publicist R. Couri Hay told The New York Times in July 2023. “She’s learned how to close the door and close the shutters and remain private. We don’t see a lot; we don’t hear a lot.” The memoir description promises “behind-the-scenes stories from her time in the White House, shedding light on her advocacy work and the causes close to her heart,” but it almost feels like she will tell the story from a distance.
Melania will certainly have an audience for her book, but her lack of interest in Donald Trump’s run for the presidency almost makes it feel like this is her final political chapter. She’s telling her story now because she doesn’t really want to move back to Washington, D.C. for a second chance with the American public.
