Deadlines & Commitments: Camp is open edition

The long off-season is over and the Brooklyn Nets are working out at HSS, the beginning of at least six months of pro basketball at Barclays Center Media Day is done. Hopes are high even if the betting lines are low. The first day of training camp is underway in Brooklyn to be followed by some great weather — and no doubt some reception at the Tsai’s in San Diego. The first roster decisions are this week as well. The Nets can extend Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams starting Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Liberty are five wins away from hosting Brooklyn’s first championship parade since 1955 and two months from the WNBA expansion draft.
So print this out, find a spot on your fridge and post it ... until the next edition comes along.
—October 1: Brooklyn Nets training camp opens. It will start in Brooklyn and finish in San Diego. Roster is somewhat settled with 13 fully guaranteed deals, two partially guaranteed, two two-ways, and three Exhibit 10s. That could change by the weekend.
—October 1: Nets can negotiate rookie contract extensions with Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams. Unlikely they will offer deals to any of them at this time. (The next opening for the three’s free agency comes in July when they’ll become restricted free agents. The Nets will still have matching rights.)
—October 4: Nets fly from Brooklyn to San Diego for second part of training camp.
—October 8: Nets open preseason in San Diego vs. the Clippers 10:30 p.m. ET.
—October 10: Tentative opening of the WNBA FInals.
—October 12-13: Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend (Springfield, MA) Vince Carter goes in, finally.
—October 14: Nets face Washington Wizards in first of two home preseason games, 7:30 p.m. ET.
—October 16: Nets face Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia, 7;00 p.m. ET.
—October 18: Nets face the Raptors at Barclays Center, Time TBD.
—October 19: Last day to waive a player on a non-guaranteed contract and not incur a salary cap charge.
—October 20: Last possible WNBA Finals date as long as the Libs defeat the Aces this week. Will it be Liberty vs. the Sun in the Finals? Liberty vs. Lynx? Will we finally get a parade?!?
—October 21: Deadline for Nets to extend Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams beyond their rookie contracts. Otherwise, the Nets can wait a year and the three will be restricted free agents, meaning the Nets can match any offer they get in July 2025. That scenario is the more likely one.
—October 22: Opening Night for 2024-25 season. Jalen Wilson and Keon Johnson get more guaranteed money if they make the final roster, Wilson $325,000, Johnson $700,000.

—November 19: Nets face the Hornets in the Emirates Cup at Barclays Center.

—December 6: WNBA expansion draft. Each WNBA team is allowed to protect six of their 12 roster players from the Golden State Valkyrie who become the league’s 13th team in 2025. “Golden State will have the opportunity to acquire the player contract of, or the negotiating rights to, one available player from each of the current 12 teams,”
—December 10 - 17 - Emirates Cup knockout round.
—January 24-27 - Long Island Nets —as “Les Nets” — travel to suburban Montreal for first two of six “home games” the organization is playing in Place Bell in Laval, Quebec. It’s a way for the Nets to open a new fan base in French-speaking Canada.

—February 5 - 6: “Les Nets” second visit to Montreal.
