Clallam County Acquires 404 Acres Near Sequim for Environmental and Recreational Growth
Big moves for Clallam County in the realm of ecological conservation and recreation: Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz has given the green light on a transaction that's passing 404.1 acres of land south of Highway 101, near Sequim, into the hands of the county. The Board of Natural Resources didn't balk, unanimously authorizing the Direct Transfer Agreement on June 4, as per the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
Sold for $1,240,100, the proceeds from this parcel are earmarked for DNR to acquire new lands benefiting the Common School Trust. Clallam County has plans to roll out the Dungeness Off-Channel Reservoir, not just as a leap toward environmental stewardship, but also as a functional lifeline and a buffer against climate fluctuations. "Clallam County has been working with a variety of local and statewide partners to pursue this critical regional project – a unique Off-Channel Reservoir to help improve fish habitat in the Dungeness River, support the needs of our agricultural producers, improve existing in-river fish gate infrastructure and provide our region with a hedge against climate change," Commissioner Mark Ozias told the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
This land swap is a hard pivot from the county's traditional dependence on annual Olympic Mountains snowpacks, which have become less reliable over time. Now the introduced strategies aim to bolster water supplies and support local ecosystems with innovation replacing old reliability.
But that's not the only trick up Clallam County's sleeve. The deal also brings to life a new county park teeming with trails for hiking and biking, wildlife discovery, and river access. These fresh amenities promise to stitch the community closer to the spectacular natural beauty of the region. "I’m extremely pleased and grateful to have worked with Clallam County to complete this transfer, and I thank the Board of Natural Resources for its unanimous approval," Hilary Franz said appreciatively, "This reservoir and park will provide much-needed mitigation for climate change's future impacts and provide conservation and recreation to our community members for generations to come," according to the same statement provided by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
