CWS Finals Live Updates: Tennessee takes on Texas A&M in national title series
OMAHA, Neb. – Tennessee plays for the first national championship in program history this weekend against Texas A&M from Omaha’s Charels Schwab Stadium to conclude the 2024 version of The Greatest Show on Dirt.
Game 1 is set for Saturday night at 7:30 pm eastern time on ESPN. Sunday afternoon’s Game 2 will be played at 2 o’clock eastern time on ABC and a Monday ‘if necessary’ contest will be played at 7 pm eastern time on ESPN.
The No. 1 overall seeded Volunteers (58-12) won ‘Bracket 1’ with a pair of wins over Florida State sandwiched around a triumph of North Carolina. The Aggies (52-13) were the No. 3 overall national seed and won ‘Bracket 2’ with a pair of victories over Florida and a win over Kentucky. Both teams are 3-0 thus far in Omaha.
The two teams squared off back in the Southeastern Conference Tournament as Tennessee won the battle 7-4 to advance on in Hoover. UT’s Chris Stamos and AJ Causey combined to pitch 7.1 innings of three-run baseball in the victory.
Graduate lefty Chris Stamos (3-0, 4.26 ERA) will make the start for Tennessee while fellow lefty Ryan Prager (9-1, 2.88 ERA) gets the nod for Texas A&M.
This is the second time in program history Tennessee has played for a national title and the first since 1951. This Finals series marks the third in four years where a pair of SEC teams go for the gold. The Aggies are also going for their first championship in program history while it would be 24th team national championship (all sports) and the first since 2009 (women’s indoor track & field) for the Vols.
A series win this weekend would also mean the first SEC team in history to reach 60 victories in a single season and just the fourth conference team to win the SEC regular season title, SEC Tournament title and College World Series title in the same season, joining Vanderbilt (2019), LSU (2009) and LSU (1993). If Tennessee wins the national championship, it will become the first No. 1 overall seed to do so since Miami in 1999.
