'Grey's Anatomy' Season 20 Finale Sets Up a Potential Cast Shakeup
Another season of Grey's Anatomy has ended and we are once again wondering: what is Grey Sloan going to look like next season? The hospital has been through so many ups and downs in the past few seasons from surviving the COVID-19 pandemic to losing the teaching program and then reinstating it, only to lose Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) to a research job across the country. At the end of Grey's Anatomy Season 20, not only have multiple attendings been fired, but the hospital may lose its entire resident staff and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Hell hath no fury like a Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) scorned, and the head of the Fox Foundation went on a firing spree after she found out Meredith and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) went behind her back with Teddy's (Kim Raver) knowledge to continue Alzheimer's research that Catherine had forbidden. By the end of the finale, Teddy, Amelia, Meredith and Owen (Kevin McKidd) were all out of jobs. To make matters worse, Catherine was set to make a decision about making Lucas (Niko Terho) repeat his intern year. The rest of the interns showed up to the meeting for a Spartacus moment, saying no one wanted to leave him behind. When the motion didn't faze Catherine, Bailey stepped in and threatened to resign as well. The two dominant personalities faced off in a stare-down as the credits rolled. While it's not the most dramatic finale that Grey's Anatomy has ever had, the cliffhanger did leave us with a lot of burning questions for the upcoming season. Let's discuss. As we mentioned above, Amelia, Teddy and Owen are all out of a job. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) essentially retired during the finale. The interns and residents are threatening a mass exodus, potentially with Bailey leading the charge. Meredith isn't leaving Boston, so who is going to run this hospital and its departments? We already know that Schmitt (Jake Borelli) and Yasuda (Midori Francis) are leaving early next season, but it's unclear who will still be at the hospital to throw them a going away party.Could it be that the finale is setting up a major cast shakeup? After all, many of the actors are still negotiating their contracts, and the show is in the midst of budget cuts that will reduce the cast's episode guarantees. It's safe to say change is afoot. Is Lucas even staying in Seattle? It's really nice to see how the interns have banded together after throwing each other under the bus at every turn in the Season 20 premiere, but what is all of this for? Before Lucas went into his meeting with Catherine, he had a job offer from Maggie's (Kelly McCreary) hospital in Chicago to become a cardio resident. He had the best score on his ABSITE exam out of everyone in his class, so he absolutely does not need to do a remedial intern year. He could save everyone's jobs by just taking Maggie's job offer, but then we would circle back to question one and ask again: Who works at this hospital??? 3. Will Jo tell Link that she's pregnant? With all of the personnel issues going on in the finale, we forgot to mention that Jo (Camilla Luddington) also discovers that she's pregnant in the episode. She faints while tending to babies in the NICU, and the follow-up blood test reveals that she is, in fact, with child. When she sees Link later, she decides not to tell him about the baby. They had a pregnancy scare a few weeks ago and decided that they were not ready for another child, but did agree they want more kids together down the line. Jo deciding not to tell Link at that moment means she's conflicted about the news, and we're unsure where that storyline could be heading.4. Will Meredith and Amelia continue their research?Catherine originally offered to allow Meredith and Amelia to keep their jobs if they handed over their research to Tom Koracic (Greg Germann) so he could take over. Meredith instead published their findings on the NIH website, leading to her and Amelia's instant firing. The question is, Will anyone pay Meredith and Amelia to continue this research now that they've made an enemy out of Catherine Fox? Will she allow them to work after they used Fox Foundation resources without her consent? There's no way that Grey's Anatomy would let anyone but Meredith pursue the cure for Alzheimer's, but it remains to be seen how she'll continue the work when Catherine Fox is against it. 5. What is Kwan's backstory? We've learned a little about what led Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) to be an intern at Grey Sloan, but a whole other chapter of his life was opened up in the finale. A woman with asthma came in to be checked out after inhaling a lot of wildfire smoke. She revealed that she was in a car accident that put her in a coma and took away years of her memories. Those memories apparently included being engaged to Kwan. He dropped that truth bomb to Adams after giving her an emergency medicine to clear her airways and she swore that she knew him from somewhere. We got no other details about that situation, why the broke up, and what his involvement with her accident was. You better believe we are waiting for that storyline to be developed next season. Grey's Anatomy will return for Season 21 on ABC this fall. Next, What We Know About 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 21 So Far
