Blue Chips: Breaking down Top 100 Michigan QB target Brady Hart
I recently caught up with Cocoa (Fla.) High offensive coordinator Adam Franco to get his thoughts on Top 100 Michigan quarterback target Brady Hart.
Here are some highlights from the interview.
On his overall thoughts on Hart:
“When someone first transfers to Cocoa, you evaluate how they are going to be in the locker room. Cocoa is a premier place to play football, and we see a lot of guys come in and try to be other people. Maybe they have too much bravado. Those people always end up showing their true colors. From the get-go, Brady came in and was always authentic. He never wavered from that. He’s always a team player and looking out for team success. We have a couple of other guys on our teams that are MaxPreps All-Americans with similar personalities. When you have guys that are fully focused on team success from your leaders, it makes us a really strong program.”
On Hart’s strengths as a quarterback:
“He has natural athletic ability. He was a little hurt when he first came to us. You saw him really up the mental side and understanding of the game — the best place to throw the ball or which side of the field to work. He really grew his mental muscle. That was evident when we progressed our offense faster with our reads. Instead of doing an either or type of read, he was able to get into multi-progression. That let us expand the offense and take advantage of some teams like St. Thomas and Venice. On paper, they should dominate us because they are bigger schools. But we’re able to hang with them because we spread out, and Brady is smart enough to read their defenses.”
On what he wants to see from Hart as a junior:
“Consistency and being able to spread the ball across the entirety of the field. Last year, we had two really good receivers and two young guys. This year we have five receivers that could be Division I when it’s all said and done. Being a quarterback that truly reads a defense, doesn’t care about what receivers are in what positions and truly executes a play to its max potential. We did a good job spreading the ball last year, but we relied heavily on (On300 prospect) Jayvan Boggs because he was our true premier receiver. We’ll beat teams this year by making them honor the entire width of the field and depth of the field. That’s what I want to see this year — command the entire offense and use the full weapon set.”
On Michigan:
“It’s a great program. I told him ‘you are deciding between blue chip programs not a few lower levels.’ Those places have been staples forever. It’s about finding the place you fit the best. Don’t worry about the quarterback in front of you or who they recruit after you. Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and that will continue through his collegiate career. I think he fits in pretty well in any offense. It will be interesting to see how the offense morphs at Michigan now that (Jim) Harbaugh is gone. The thing that was eye-opening about the culture at Michigan was how many offensive linemen came back for their senior seasons. All those guys probably could have gone to the draft last year, but they had a team goal of winning a national championship. It’s going to be interesting to see if that culture continues to translate. I think it likely does with Sherrone (Moore). My best friend actually played high school football with Sherrone. I think he’s the right guy to keep the culture. If that stays, then that’s a fit for Brady.”
On Michigan quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell stopping by:
“I talked to him a little bit at practice. He loved Brady. He loved the way the ball came out of his hands and decision making and throwing on time. You look at our offense, and people will say ‘you need to take more shots down the field.’ But do we? We can throw a 12-yard out four times, and that’s 100 percent success rate or we can throw a 50/50 ball one time. I think he was impressed with how methodical our offense was and how Brady knew which side of the field to work and timing. That’s a college type quarterback.”
