NBA Draft Thread: Will Brooklyn Nets get into second round? Nope
After silence in round 1, we’ll be tracking if the suddenly rebuilding Brooklyn Nets get active in round 2 of the NBA Draft The Brooklyn Nets didn’t make a pick in the first round on Wednesday night or the second on Thursday afternoon, but between their two big trades — one with the New York Knicks and one with the Houston Rockets — plus re-signing of Nic Claxton, they’ve been the talk the young NBA off-season.
Yes, for the first time, the NBA Draft has been made into a two-night event, with the second round beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon on ESPN; the Nets will still had a chance to trade into the (slightly less sexy) action. The early start-time can be chalked up to the NBA bowing out of primetime competition with the 2024’s first presidential debate over on CNN.
Unlike the first round, there wasn’t even the hint of a trade on Thursday and it simply appeared the Nets weren’t interested in any of the prospects in what is almost universally seen as a mediocre draft. The Nets were the only team without a first or second round pick going in. It was the second time in three years the Nets didn’t make a pick.
Additionally, the second round was held at ESPN Studios, the first time any part of the NBA Draft wasn’t hosted by the Nets since 2011, first in Newark, then in Brooklyn. Rather the 28-pick second round was held at ESPN’s studios on Pier 17 in the South Street Seaport district of Lower Manhattan
In late April, at Jordi Fernández’s introductory press conference, GM Sean Marks said, “I think we look at the draft the same way every year. It’s take the best available. If there’s somebody in there that, wow, they’re slipping, can we get in there at that particular pick? That would be important. For us just to go and say, ‘Hey, we, we got the 20th pick, we got the 44th pick,’ that doesn’t do us any good. For us this year, it’s gonna be more strategic.”
However, picks came and went, including some who had been mocked to teams in the first round.
Duke Blue Devil Kyle Filipowski attended the first round of the draft and did not get drafted despite being in lottery conversations all season. (In a bizarre turn of events, ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony hinted on Thursday morning that Filipowski’s slide was in part due to his relationship with a much older girlfriend...)
1) This led me down an insane Filipowski rabbit hole. 2) Givony doing Filipowski's girlfriend so many favors in his description. This looks like very iffy and suspect. pic.twitter.com/ylcI6BcprC— W² (@thewarnerwest) June 27, 2024
He went at No. 32 to the Utah Jazz. Another player mocked to the first round, Johnny Furphy of Kansas went at No. 35 to the Indiana Pacers.
Other potential targets also went early in the second. include the G League Ignite’s Tyler Smith, another 20-year-old forward. We wrote about Brooklyn’s possible interest in Smith in the pre-draft process, after NBADraft.net’s Aran Smith wrote that “there’s a good chance a team like Brooklyn will make a deal to grab one of the Knicks picks ... Tyler Smith is considered a player that could be targeted.” A team not only unlike Brooklyn but Brooklyn itself didn’t make a move. The Bucks did at No. 33.
And rumors that Cam Johnson might be moved are still circulating but not with the specificity of the night before. Just before the 13th pick, a Kings beat writer reported the Nets and Kings might be talking about a swap involving that pick and Johnson. Then this morning, there were rumors that the Lakers might have interest in Johnson.
