4-star WR Jalen Cooper at SMU ‘could take over college football’
2025 Cibolo (Tex.) Steele four-star wide receiver Jalen Cooper finished up his SMU official visit earlier this month and enjoyed everything about the Pony Express weekend.
“It was a great weekend,” Cooper told On3. “Got to meet with some of the coaches I don’t get to talk to you on a daily basis. Seeing the school and all the inside out, so seeing how they work, it was good.
“It was pretty much everything,” Cooper said of what stood out. “Everything was good. From walking in the first time and then seeing the construction on what they have coming in the future. So everything was good.”
SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff impressed him overall.
“Talking to all the coaches and seeing how they interact with just not their own position guys, but really meeting with coach Rhett in his hotel room and talking about how they’re ready for the ACC,” he said. “Just what they’re attacking on in the offseason is really good.”
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens has plenty of playing time to offer for Cooper, who is a Top 150 prospect for On3.
“Great guy, great relationship. He teaches me the little things,” Cooper said. “We had a film session on my routes and what I can do better. He taught me the inside-outs with how he’s with his wide receivers. So for him to spill the knowledge on me with that, it was nice.”
Watching the Mustangs capture a league championship before moving on to the ACC is a big deal as well for him.
“They win the American and going to the ACC with a bigger competition, it’s a big role for them and I know they’ll do good,” he said. “Going into the ACC playing like the Florida State, NC State, all the bigger competitions. It’s really good knowing you can come to school, have great education and play really good football.”
SMU nabbed four commitments from the weekend and watching DFW wideout Xavier Johnson join Daylon Singleton in the class makes Cooper feel like he can do big things at wide receiver.
“It’s good to see kids that are coming you know if I were to come in with them, we would probably take over college football, but I know I have nothing to worry about because if I still want to commit I could because I know SMU’s losing their top receivers so by the time I get here if it’s us three, we can take over college football.”
Cooper will be at Kansas State May 31st, Kansas June 7th, Baylor June 14th and Houston June 21st for official visits. He then plans a decision in July and as it stands, the Mustangs are the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine leader.
“My education comes first. Then how they can fit my skill set in the offense. I want to fit in the offense in any way to help the team win” he added. “Finally I want to see how I vibe with the players and coaching staff.
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Cooper is the No. 323 overall prospect and No. 48 wide receiver in the nation. On3 ranks him as the No. 142 overall prospect and No. 19 wideout nationally.
