Man Seen Torching Flag On Upper East Side Sought By Police
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — In the most recent wave of protests, a man torched an American flag in front of a historic World War One memorial in Central Park, police said.The Monday night incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime, NYPD officials said. The incident unfolded about 6:30 p.m. as a 48-year-old woman was standing near Park Ave. and East 75th Street, wearing an American flag on her back, authorities said.An as-yet-unidentified man then walked up and stole the flag, police said.Later that same day, the same man was seen lighting the flag on fire in front of the One Hundred Seventh Infantry Memorial located at the intersection of Fifth Ave. and E. 67th St. The One Hundred Seventh Infantry Memorial pays tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War I in the infantry.In a separate incident on Monday, the bronze sculpture was covered with spray-painted words like "Gaza" and "Free Palestine," police said."The 107th United States Infantry Memorial in Central Park is a symbol of the freedoms so many fought and died for — the same freedoms many are abusing with cowardly acts of vandalism," Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet. "We cannot allow these symbols to be desecrated by some in our city wanting to cause chaos and disorder."Police have asked for help identifying the suspect, who is described as a man with a light complexion and medium build.
