What Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman told newly offered DB Larry Moon III after Irish Invasion
With scholarship offers from 19 power conference programs entering Sunday’s Notre Dame Irish Invasion camp, Aliquippa (Pa.) High cornerback Larry Moon III was the most decorated 2027 class participant. Throughout about a four-hour workout, the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder proved as much.
Moon, who like other 2027 recruits, does not yet have a ranking, was one of just three recruits out of about 120 to walk away from the Fighting Irish’s marquee prospect camp with a scholarship offer. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman extended him one after his impressive performance.
“It’s really good, really special,” Moon said. “Notre Dame has a great football tradition. (Freeman) told me that this place offers a lot beyond football. … Freeman was great to speak with. He was just being real.”
Moon worked out with Irish defensive backs coach Mike Mickens, who complimented his technique and football profile. The rising high school sophomore enjoyed the attention Mickens gave him and other defensive back competitors during Sunday’s session.
“It was a pleasure how he took the time to coach us all individually,” Moon said. “He didn’t coach us all the same; he coached us individually and coached us to our skills.”
Mickens specifically recognized how Moon’s vision separated him from the rest of the campers.
“He said I stood out with my eyes,” Moon said. “He said my eyes have me right in the head, in the right spot all the time.”
Moon does not have a recruiting ranking because On3 and other primary recruiting media services have not yet rated 2027 class recruits.
Where Notre Dame football stands in Larry Moon’s already-loaded college football recruitment
Of the 19 power conference schools that have offered him, Moon has been to Penn State the most, visiting State College seven times. He’s also seen Pittsburgh three times and Miami (Florida) twice. West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Tennessee, UCF, Syracuse, USC, UCLA, Ohio State, Rutgers, Florida State and Texas have all welcomed him to campus once.
The latter five schools have not yet offered him. However, after checking out both Ohio State and Ole Miss later this month, Moon hopes to add one from those programs. Now, after adding the Irish to his offer sheet, he hopes to return to South Bend by the end of the year.
“I have to come out to a game,” Moon said. I have to go to a Notre Dame game, man.”
After all, watching the Irish on television is how he developed his interest in camping and visiting South Bend.
“I mean, if you’re not camping with the Irish, then what are you doing?” he said. “I watch the Shamrock Series games. The 2016 jerseys were crazy that game.”
Moon made it obvious after Sunday’s showing that he could one day be on the field competing during one of those Shamrock Series games. His goal was to leave no doubt that he is one of the best prospects in the 2027 class, and he accomplished that.
“I’m the best (defensive back) in 2027,” he said.
