Which brings us to our annual series breaking down the top 50 players on the current roster. As we go along on this list you’ll get an idea of the overall depth of talent on Mario Cristobal’s team this year as he seeks Miami’s second 10-win season in the last two decades.
Today we are at No. 7:
NO. 7 PK ANDY BORREGALES
Why He’s No. 7
Borregales enters his senior year as one of the nation’s top returning kickers, and he’s pretty much an automatic three points anytime Miami crosses the 30-yard line … with range of over 50 yards. Borregales finished this past season hitting on 22 of 26 field goals (80 percent) with one blocked. Of his 73 kickoffs, 46 were touchbacks (63 percent) with only one out of bounds. He hit a long field goal of 51 twice – against Florida State and Louisville. He also converted 44 of 45 extra points. Prior to last season? Borregales hit 17 of 21 field goals as a true freshman in 2021 (long of 55) and in 2022 made 17 of 20 with a long of 49. He improved his kickoff touchback percentage from 45.1 percent in 2021 to 64.9 percent in 2022 and then was at the aforementioned 63 percent this past season. He was an All-ACC First Team pick last year and was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist. His goal this year: To join older brother Jose as a Groza Award winner from Miami.
What he needs to do to move up this list
Remain consistent. Borregales is already one of the nation’s top kickers, and in this year’s high-powered offense he should have plenty of chances to shine. He’s gained weight, up to around 200 pounds, and has a strong leg. So maybe Mario Cristobal will even let him attempt a 60-yarder this season? His range and accuracy is excellent, so this is one position where Miami really doesn’t have any worries.
Realistic season objective
Borregales already showed in his first three seasons he can be a very reliable kicker with a strong leg, and there’s no reason that won’t continue this year. When Miami isn’t scoring touchdowns, you can count on field goal makes from pretty much anywhere near 50 yards or so. That is something that can’t be underestimated in terms of importance for this team to pull out the close games that come along every season.
