3 key questions for NC State’s first official visit weekend
NC State will host double-digit recruits June 7-9, a group made up entirely of out-of-state prospects. The Wolfpack hosted at least one North Carolina prep prospect every weekend of last year’s summer official visit season.
NC State’s recruiting footprint has continued to grow. Prospects from Florida, Georgia and Mississippi know the Wolfpack brand well. The program is playing on a national stage more frequently, which leads to more overall awareness of the program.
That has an effect on the recruiting trail. NC State’s first official visit weekend of the 2025 recruiting cycle will be packed with intriguing storylines worth following closely.
Will NC State continue its recent recruiting success in Florida?
Florida is one of NC State’s three main pipeline states alongside North Carolina and Georgia. Four of this weekend’s visitors— three-star cornerback Robert Jones III, three-star defensive lineman Mykah Newton, three-star cornerback Caden Gordon, wide receiver Jamar Browder and defensive line commit Colby Cronk all hail from the Sunshine State.
Cronk joined the class during his second trip to Raleigh. Jones, Gordon, Newton and Browder have never visited the Wolfpack before.
NC State worked its way into their recruitments by showing strong interest over the phone and in person. The Pack staff maintains a strong presence at Florida high schools during evaluation periods.
Having Cronk on campus this weekend should help NC State’s efforts with the other three prospects, especially when talking to Newton, who the commit has already reached out to. If the staff secured commitments from those two edge rushers, that would be an outstanding start to the defensive line class.
The Wolfpack sits comfortably in the top groups for Browder and Jones. Both defensive backs plan on making their commitments before the end of June, so NC State needs to make a huge impression on their visits. The Pack could use some extra momentum from this weekend.
Can NC State swing the momentum with Cameron Strong?
Cameron Strong has not visited NC State since January, a huge visit for his recruitment that solidified the Pack as the team to beat behind the scenes. The program remained a top contender and emerged as one of his final three schools alongside West Virginia and Georgia Tech.
Coming out of last week’s official visits, the Mountaineers made a move in his recruitment. West Virginia holds the momentum with the Anderson (S.C.) T L Hanna High defensive back for now, but NC State has a great chance to flip that this weekend.
Strong visited NC State three times from October to January. Each time he stopped by campus, the Woflpack buzz around his recruitment grew significantly. Those positive vibes have died down after five months away from Raleigh, but this official visit could be a turning point.
He really likes NC State and cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell. The fact that he is still coming on this visit is extremely significant. I’m keeping my prediction in for the Wolfpack because the program should be able to build significant momentum with him during his 48 hours on campus.
The cornerback has been hinting at a July 7 commitment date on social media.
How many defensive linemen will NC State take?
NC State secured an early defensive line commit from Cronk— a priority prospect for the staff. The Pack is very excited about him as a prospect.
Then, NC State continued to expand its defensive line board, sending out a handful of offers that developed into a busy official visit schedule. That’s purposeful. NC State wants to host a lot of defensive linemen this month or fill up its class, whichever comes first. During the June 7 weekend alone, 5 of the visitors are defensive linemen.
Based on everything TheWolfpacker.com has heard behind the scenes, this could be one of, if not the most crowded position group of this cycle. NC State would take a commitment from everyone who is scheduled to visit right now.
That sets up for a chaotic first come, first served defensive line class. The Pack signed 4 prep prospects at the position over the past two classes combined. For that reason, a minimum of three defensive linemen in this class seems likely.
At this point in the cycle, I’d project that group to be Cronk, Newton and Makhi Williams-Lee. That trio would be arguably the program’s most impressive defensive line class of the Wolfpack’s 3-3-5 defensive era.
