Bubba Wallace reveals Michael Jordan texts him after nearly every race
When Bubba Wallace finishes a race, he can usually rely on having a text message from his boss, the one and only Michael Jordan. The NASCAR team co-owner is always keeping an eye on how his drivers are performing on the track.
Bubba Wallace also happens to be in an intense battle for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. He sits 21 points below Chris Buescher for the final spot on points. Now, there are a few things that could happen that would end in Wallace going playoff racing.
Michael Jordan pays attention. He knows what is going on. So, as revealed on Dale Jr.’s podcast this week, he had a message of support for Bubba after Daytona.
“[MJ] understands the situation that we’re in and he can see everybody fighting hard and doing what we need to do,” Wallace explained to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “Daytona our goal was to go in there and make up ground to the 17 and the 1. We did that for the 1, the 17 got some pretty good stage points there, especially in Stage 2, but we did what we were supposed to do. We just had an unexpected new winner.
“Guess you can’t say unexpected because it is Daytona, so you gotta kind of accept anything. I think we did what we were supposed to do, we built a gap if there wasn’t a new winner, yeah. Where we fell short of is that we weren’t the new winner. So, that’s what I was frustrated about the most. Just wasn’t able to work out in our favor. But MJ is usually texting me after every race with good job or whatever it may be, so, he’s very much involved.”
One more race.
Bubba Wallace has one more chance
Last week at Daytona, Bubba Wallace and his team did what they came in to do. They made up points on Ross Chastain, but it wasn’t all good news. Chris Buescher earned a lot of stage points and with Harrison Burton’s win, Wallace got pushed out of the playoff picture.
With the GOAT in his corner, and a lot of speed recently in his 23XI Toyota Camry, Wallace could make the playoffs. A win in the Southern 500 would be major for his career. But there is a world where Wallace points his way in.
With a 21-point deficit, it will take an exceptional race from Wallace, 50+ points, or a poor day for Chris Buescher. Let’s not forget that Darlington can be a dangerous track for those on the bubble. One early wreck or mechanical issue, and Buescher could find himself in a tough position.
Bubba Wallace has to race for the win. That’s how he makes it to the NASCAR Playoffs. He either wins and makes it, has an overwhelming points day, or he misses out and knows he did all he could to put his team in position to win the race. It’s going to be a nerve-wracking day for the No. 23 team.
