Deleted Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 post-credits scene shows new ending for Captain Price
13 years later, Modern Warfare 3 is back in the news (Activision)
A deleted post-credit scene from the original Modern Warfare 3 has been discovered, which is far less ambiguous as to the fate of Captain Price.
Call Of Duty’s continued dominance in the modern gaming world stems back to the success of the original Modern Warfare from 2007, which has, for better and worse, shaped the trajectory of the franchise ever since.
Developer Infinity Ward’s original Modern Warfare trilogy culminated with 2011’s Modern Warfare 3. Although the more recent reboot of the Modern Warfare brand has relatively little in common in terms of plot, especially after the first game.
Now, 13 years after Modern Warfare 3 was released, a deleted post-credits scene for the story campaign has surfaced online, which includes some notable additions.
In the original ending to Modern Warfare 3, Captain Price kills antagonist Vladimir Makarov by wrapping a cable around his neck and punching him through a glass roof. As Price falls through the roof and looks on at Makarov’s hanging body, he lights up a cigar before the screen fades to black – leaving Price’s fate somewhat ambiguous, even though he is severely injured.
A cut post-credits scene, restored from the game’s original files by YoYo1Loveand shared by Call Of Duty modder Vlad Loktionov, now shows a more definitive end to Price’s character.
In the clip, a mysterious character labelled as ‘shadowman’ in the game’s files is seen walking into the frame in the distance. After he stares and leaves, the camera tilts sideways and Price drops his cigar before the screen fades to black – implying Price has died.
A picture is then shown of the four key members from Operation Kingfish – Soap, Captain Price, Sandman, and Ghost – who, if this ending was included in the final game, all died during events across the Modern Warfare trilogy.
While it’s unclear why this post-credits scene wasn’t included, it’s possible that Infinity Ward wanted Price’s fate to remain uncertain, to leave the door open for his return.
Some have also speculated the mysterious figure shown in the scene could have been planned as a villain in a potential sequel – but this never materialised. After Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward went onto develop 2013’s Call Of Duty: Ghosts.
Others have suggested that the character is meant to be the personification of Death, so Infinity Ward may have got cold feet about implying any supernatural elements in the story campaign.
