I’m forced to shop at Sam’s Club after Costco canceled my membership – it was a simple mistake but can’t be resolved
A COSTCO shopper had their membership abruptly canceled by the retailer.
The situation could not be easily resolved, forcing the member to shop at Sam’s Club.

The shopper shared the details in a lengthy post to the Costco subreddit from seven months ago.
They explained how their partner had spent multiple hours shopping in-store at Costco before being unable to check out due to issues with their membership.
At the customer service counter, she was informed that their account showed in the system as being inactive/canceled and only corporate could amend the issue.
“It said that the other member on the account (me) had canceled the order (I didn’t and hadn’t received any emails from them about it though),” wrote the user.
Their partner was also told she could not renew her membership or pay for a new one, forcing her to leave her cart full of groceries at the store.
The Reddit user explained they had purchased the Costco membership through Instacart because their first order was online, then came into Costco later that week to pick up their membership cards and shop in-store.
“It was ‘canceled’ about a week after we shopped in-store and my account doesn’t seem to exist anymore when I try to log in with the correct info, but the payment for the membership definitely went through,” they wrote.
They updated the Reddit post after speaking on the phone with seven people from Costco customer service and Instacart for nearly three hours.
“I’m still sadly out the $60 and the membership, and my partner went through the shopping all over again at Sam’s Club,” they shared.
The user was told Costco could not resolve the issue and was recommended to call corporate the next day.
The member concluded the cause was likely a bug caused by Instacart and Costco’s systems interacting.
REDDIT ADVICE
Several Costco shoppers turned to the comment section to offer advice.
One user suggested the member call and ask to speak with the membership manager or supervisor at their local Costco.
“There’s a big difference between talking to a person in your local warehouse and calling the customer service lines for the entire company,” wrote the Redditor.
“You could call any warehouse and they all can see the same notes, but Membership employees understand them.”
Costco versus Sam's Club memberships
Both Costco and Sam's Club are membership-only warehouse club retail stores that offer a wide range of products at lower prices than traditional retail stores.
Here is a breakdown of their membership pricing and some of the benefits.
Costco:
$60 yearly Gold Star membership, $60 Business membership, $120 yearly Executive membership
Specially priced gas
Discount car rentals and car insurance
Same-day grocery delivery through Instacart
Tech support on electronics bought at Costco
Sam’s Club:
$50 yearly Club membership, $110 yearly Plus membership
Specially priced gas
Free tire and car repairs
Curbside pickup
Discount travel
Another user advised the shopper to dispute the $60 charge with their bank, as the cancellation was not their fault.
Other users hypothesized about the true cause of the cancellation.
One Redditor suggested that an employee “f***ed up” and now Costco was trying to cover their mistake.
“Costco systems MAY be antiquated, but the system is EXTREMELY transparent when it comes to figuring out what went wrong,” they said.
In other Costco news, a member fumed after the retailer denied their return – and the item was only a month old.
