Cubs issue statement, announce tribute after Ryne Sandberg's death

The Chicago Cubs have issued a statement after the death of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who died Monday at the age of 65.
Sandberg had been battling metastatic prostate cancer in recent years, and his death sent shockwaves throughout the baseball world.
Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts issued a statement on behalf of his family and the team:
“Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise,” he said. “His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle, and competitive fire were hallmarks of his career. He was immensely proud of his teammates and his role as a global ambassador of the game of baseball, but most of all, he was proud of Margaret, his children and his role as husband, father, and grandfather.”
The Cubs also announced that they will wear a special jersey patch for the remainder of the season in Sandberg’s memory.
Sandberg is survived by his wife Margaret, his five children and 11 grandchildren.
The Sandberg family asked that any donations in Ryne’s memory be made to Cubs Charities.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred also issued a statement.
“His many friends across the game were in his corner as he courageously fought cancer in recent years,” he said, in part. “We will continue to support the important work of Stand Up to Cancer in Ryne’s memory. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to Ryne’s family, Cubs fans everywhere and his admirers throughout our national pastime.”
Sandberg played nearly his entire MLB career with the Cubs, winning National League MVP honors in 1984 while collecting nine Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger awards. He was a 10-time All-Star and won the 1990 Home Run Derby at Wrigley Field.
In all, Sandberg hammered 282 home runs and drove in 1,061 RBI’s in his big-league career, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
In recent years he had served as an ambassador for the Cubs, and had his statue unveiled outside of Wrigley Field last season.
