Second-year surge: Georgia WR Rara Thomas
Georgia’s 2024 roster is set. The winter and spring transfer portal windows are closed and Kirby Smart now knows what players will be on his roster when preseason camp begins around August 1. The Bulldogs will be ranked by most, if not all, as the No. 1 team in the country going into the coming season.
If they’re going to live up to that hype, some guys are going to have to step up in their second seasons with the team. Below DawgsHQ continues a series discussing each player going into their second year with the program. Next up is another senior receiver who is in his second season at Georgia and expectations are high.
WR Rara Thomas
Size: 6-foot-2 200 pounds
On3 Industry Ranking (2021): No. 793 overall, No. 118 wide receiver, No. 32 in Alabama
2023 Stats: Thomas played in 11 of Georgia’s 14 games in 2023 after transferring in from Mississippi State. A foot injury caused him to miss the last three games of the year but prior to that he caught 23 passes for 383 yards and a touchdown.
Thomas strengths and weaknesses
Thomas is the total package from a physical standpoint. He has good size, great speed, and is a strong route runner. One element of Thomas’ game that doesn’t get a lot of buzz is his explosiveness. The Alabama native gets off the ground quickly and he’s able to get into his breaks smoothly while bursting out of them. He also tracks the ball really well and can be a force in those 50/50 situations.
When DawgsHQ spoke with Thomas after the Orange Bowl in late December, he admitted that the offense was tough for him to pick up. He came from an Air Raid attack, which was very simple, to a more complex pro-style scheme and it took him some time to pick it up. Once he did, that, he was a bigger part of the offense. At this point he has had over a year to learn the offense and should me more comfortable.
The Buzz…
While Bulldog fans tend to talk more about Dillon Bell, Dominic Lovett, Arian Smith and even Colbie Young, there are a number of folks inside and/or close to the program who believe Thomas has the most NFL potential. He checks off a lot of boxes and once he was fully healthy this spring, he generated a lot of chatter. That showed in the G-Day spring scrimmage when he caught a deep ball from Carson Beck to set up the game-tying score for the red team.
In 2024…
Thomas showed in 2023 that he can change the game. The explosive play he generated against South Carolina jumpstarted the offense and he had another big catch and run against Ole Miss in November. Thomas is going to be a significant part of the passing game in his second season with the program because he does so many things well. With that said, Georgia has a lot of mouths to feed in the passing game. He’ll share time with Young at the X-receiver spot but Mike Bobo showed in the G-Day game that he’ll get both players on the field. His ability to play either outside receiver position is valuable for this team.
