Outer Banks student concert celebrates cancer survivors, including music teacher

First Flight High School chorus director John Buford is inviting those impacted by cancer and the community to join him for the school’s annual October concert, this year celebrating cancer survivors. After a yearlong battle with cancer, Buford will return to the stage for the Oct. 22 event.
The concert titled “Harmonies of Hope” is about celebrating life, strength and resilience. “It’s a way to express gratitude and hope, both for myself and for the many other cancer survivors in our community,” Buford said in a news release.
The concert will feature a mix of songs inspired by survivor themes, reflecting on beauty, strength, happiness, hope, love and the best of life. Buford said he hopes the event will provide a sense of community and inspiration to all attendees.
A team from The Outer Banks Hospital will be on site to provide information about local cancer care and support services. There will also be special gifts for cancer survivors and a reception sponsored by Manteo and First Flight Lions Clubs following the concert.
The concert starts at 6 p.m. at the David E. Oaksmith Auditorium at First Flight High School. Choristers from both First Flight high and middle schools will join together on stage for the performance.
