Trump Has Found the One Late-Night Host He Likes: Bill Maher
Bill Maher has never been my comedic cup of tea. If I wanted to hear an Islamophobe who hated when women finished sentences talk for an hour straight, I’d go back to my college ethics class. Maher has put me in the uncomfortable position of saying “Hell yeah, Ben Affleck.” Not a good feeling. But now, Maher doesn’t only have to suffer from one random woman’s total disdain; he must also suffer from Donald Trump’s favor. In a clip that’s circulating from his Club Random podcast, which aired on Monday, Maher said, “I would have thought, and I gotta own it, that these tariffs were going to fucking sink this economy by this time. And they didn’t.” Because the country hadn’t fallen apart by Fourth of July, Maher thought his April comments about tariffs on Real Time With Bill Maher weren’t too fair to Trump and the president’s plans for the economy.“Now it could happen tomorrow,” Maher continued. “I’m just saying that’s reality. So, let’s work first from the reality of that. Not from ‘I just hate Donald Trump.’ Because that’s boring and doesn’t get us anywhere and leads you to dishonesty. Because the truth is, I don’t know what his strategy is. But look, the stock market is at record highs.”Blech. PlayYou know who liked this reasoning? Trump. He posted the clip to his Truth Social account just a few hours later, writing a short “Thanks, Bill!” Just when we thought Trump was starting to lose his posse of podcast bros with Andrew Schulz’s increasingly shaky faith, the president appears to gain another member. Trump is like Thanos, except instead of infinity stones, it’s just guys talking for two hours straight in front of exposed brick. An equally existential threat to humanity, if you ask me. In a time when Trump is actively attacking every other late-night show host for their (sometimes tepid) criticisms of his presidency, his suspected involvement with a guy who ran an international pedophile ring and his criminal record, Trump is giving Maher his shiny stamp of approval. Maher has been further endorsed by conservative news outlets like Fox News, which gleefully reposted the Maher clip with the headline “Bill Maher Admits He Was Wrong About Trump Tariffs Killing Economy.” I don’t have many more scathing remarks for Maher. His tiptoe into the MAGAverse will almost certainly result in enough punishment. But hey, Bill? Trump’s favor won’t keep you safe from his ire.
