This Northern Rivers event is calling for community action to end the domestic violence crisis

An upcoming event from the Northern Rivers Community Foundation’s (NRCF) Women’s Giving Circle will aim to create discussion that moves beyond surface-level conversations and focuses on meaningful action towards ending domestic violence.
In the 12 months to September 2022, the Lismore LGA recorded 222 domestic violence-related assaults, according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, with similarly alarming statistics reported across Richmond Valley, Tweed and Clarence Valley.
Inviting the community to take an active role in building a more inclusive and compassionate society, the NRCF’s upcoming International Women’s Day event will take place on Friday, March 14 at Frida’s Field.
The gathering will explore how genuine partnership between all genders can create more balanced workplaces, relationships and leadership.

“We want everyone – men, women, and young people, to be more than bystanders when it comes to gender equality,” says Amy Colli, coordinator of the Women’s Giving Circle, a collective of passionate women taking action to tackle local disadvantage.
“By taking an active role in creating a society where all women feel valued, heard, and supported, we can take real, impactful steps toward lasting change.”

A growing crisis
The CEO of NRCR, Sam Henderson says there’s a growing crisis in the community.
“The combined pressures of post-flood recovery, rising domestic violence, and a critical shortage of affordable housing are impacting women and families in our region every day,” says Sam.
“At NRCF it’s about providing ongoing, tangible support and ensuring grassroots organisations have the resources they need to help those who need it most.”

There’s also a notable prevalence of trauma among young people in the region, according to Sarah Rainbird, Head of Philanthropy at Human Nature.
Having been one of the Women’s Giving Circle’s 2024 grant recipients, Human Nature works with young people who have experienced complex trauma, many of whom come from environments affected by domestic violence and instability.
“Many of the adolescents we work with have experienced significant hardship, often stemming from family violence and a lack of emotional safety. When we invest in the well-being of women, we’re also investing in the next generation; children and young people grow up in more secure environments, breaking cycles of trauma and strengthening the social fabric of our entire community,” says Rainbird.
What to expect at the event
The event will explore why gender equality is a shared responsibility, examining how to ‘call in’ rather than ‘call out’ and foster constructive engagement with men.
Through storytelling and lived experiences, speakers will reflect on the importance of dismantling systemic barriers without placing the burden of education solely on those affected.
The exceptional line-up of event speakers will feature Mindy Woods, Founder & Native Food Queen, Annabelle Hickson, Editor of Galah, Odette Barry, Founder of Odette & Co and Women’s Agenda’s Editor-in-Chief Tarla Lambert-Patel.
