2 Indian Women Naval Officers Set To Sail Around The World In Eight Months Onboard INS Tarini

New Delhi: While Phileas Fogg, hero of the Jules Verne novel went around the world in 80 days, he took trains (including from Mumbai to Kolkata) and steam ships, but two young women in a sailboat plan to take eight months. Their journey, potentially more difficult, will begin on October 2 in Goa and they will sail around the world, via Cape Horn (the tip of South America), Cape Leeuwenhoek, in Australia and the Cape of Good Hope--the southernmost bit of Africa-- and return after a 41,000 km trip. And mind you, in a sailboat, which will not lead to greenhouse emissions. Two lieutenant commanders of the Indian Navy, Dilna K and Roopa K, will set sail in the Tarini, a boat barely 17 metres long, stop at various places, including Fremantle in Australia and the Falkland Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean before returning to Goa. It is, as vice chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, said, a sign of "commitment to women's empowerment and gender equality." The journey will be an imspiration to people, he added. The two officers have received sufficient training: they sailed to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Mauritius and from Rio de Janeiro, In Brazil, back to India. All of them offiered substantial training, especially the return from Ro, across the Atlantic Ocean. Their mentor is a sailor known for his courage: Commander Abhilash Tomy. Rough seas apart, they will face days when it will be extremely hot and other days, just as cold. The vice chief spoke of the skill and courage of women in uniform. And as one of the sailors said: "There's no better teacher than the sea."
