Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Felony Civil Disorder for Role in Jan. 6 Capitol Riot
An Ohio man is facing the music for his part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, pleading guilty to a felony civil disorder charge for his disruptive actions that interfered with the 2020 presidential election certification process. Adrian Schmidt, 26, from Cincinnati, copped to the charge in front of U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes and is now awaiting his sentencing scheduled for Sept. 10, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Schmidt made the trek from Ohio to Washington, D.C., joining a host of rally-goers in support of the then-president, before he aggressively pushed through boundaries and confronted law enforcement. The scene that became the hallmark of the day's chaos unfolded Schmidt was seen yelling, "Our House!” and “Whose House?” as he led an encroaching mob past barricades at the Capitol's Peace Circle Monument. Court documents reveal that between 1:00 and 2:45 p.m., tensions escalated as Schmidt and the mob clashed with U.S. Capitol Police officers, with Schmidt at one point pushing against officers and their riot shields.
The Justice Department details how Schmidt, after the initial stand-off, stormed the Capitol through the Upper West Terrace doors, raising his fist in a defiant gesture amongst the blaring fire alarms before wandering through historical halls; the Rotunda and Statuary Hall were witness to his unlawful entry. His intermittent exit and re-entry and subsequent movements within the besieged building were carefully chronicled by authorities. The FBI swooped in on Schmidt, arresting him on July 28, 2023, in his home state of Ohio.
Authorities involved in the case, including the FBI’s Cincinnati and Washington Field Offices, alongside much-appreciated help from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department, characterize the events of January 6th as not merely a riot but an attack on the democratic process, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The handling of Schmidt’s case has been a joint operation between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, and the Department of Justice’s National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio providing invaluable support.
