Meanwhile, the Barclays survey revealed supermarkets were also on song — as discounts and the start of the school year triggered a 1.1 per cent rise in spending.
But cigarettes and alcohol took a hit — as takings at pubs and bars declined by 0.6 per cent after the summer holidays ended.
Cinemas were rocking with 18.2 per cent growth, thanks to blockbusters such as Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine.
Barclays’ head of retail Karen Johnson said shoppers remain cost-conscious though many “are also finding room for treats and little luxuries”.
