Five Michigan State official visitors who have slid under the radar
As Michigan State prepares for a busy June full of official visits, SpartanMag will provide a series of articles to help fans familiarize themselves with targets who make their way to campus. SpartanMag has already confirmed nearly 40 visitors for the month of June. You can find the full list here.
Michigan State currently holds five 2025 high school commitments. The remainder of the class will likely feature plenty of recruits on SpartanMag’s official visitor list, as a majority of them will want to make their decisions this summer, before their senior seasons begin.
In this article, we will take a look at five prospects on SpartanMag’s official visitor list who have not received as much coverage, and have thereby slid under the radar this visit season.
OL Drew Nichols (June 7-9)
Michigan State will welcome three-star Temecula (Calif.) Murrieta Valley High School offensive lineman Drew Nichols for an official visit on June 7, marking his first trip to East Lansing. Spartan offensive line coach Jim Michalczik offered the 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman in March.
Nichols first met Michalczik during the coach’s time at Oregon State. Nichols also has a connection to the Spartan program via his mother, who grew up in Michigan and has two brothers who attended Michigan State.
“Coach Michalczik was just talking about how I’ve met him before and how he has a mathematical approach to coaching,” Nichols said. “I appreciated that because I’m very mathematically-wired too, and it really sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. Most of the questions were about me and my family, I think he was just trying to get to know me better.
“He seemed like a brilliant coach who knows exactly what he’s looking for. I’m excited to see what he builds at Michigan State.”
Nichols holds additional offers from UCLA, Miami, Arizona and Arkansas, among others. He is the No. 998 recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the No. 89 interior offensive lineman and the No. 82 recruit from California in his class.
OL Rowan Byrne (June 7-9)
Michigan State will welcome another offensive lineman in three-star Rowan Byrne, of New Rochelle (N.Y.) Iona Preparatory School, to campus over the weekend of June 7. Byrne (6-5, 285) was an underrated add to the visitor list for Michalczik and Michigan State. The highly-recruited lineman scheduled the visit shortly after he received his Spartan offer.
Michalczik visited Byrne at his high school earlier this month. Byrne told SpartanMag that he has built a strong relationship with Michalczik behind the scenes.
Byrne will also take an official visit to Clemson on May 31. He holds additional offers from Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wisconsin, among others.
Byrne is the No. 591 recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the No. 49 interior lineman and the No. 3 recruit from New York in his class.
DB George Mullins (June 14-16)
Three-star Bushnell (Fla.) South Sumter High School cornerback George Mullins will return to East Lansing for an official visit at the end of the month. Michigan State made a strong move up the three-star’s list during an unofficial visit this spring.
Mullins (6-2, 170) is the No. 996 overall recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the No. 85 cornerback and the No. 122 recruit from Florida in his class.
Mullins holds additional offers from Mississippi State, Illinois and Louisville, among others. He will also take official visits to Oregon State (May 31) and Toledo (June 7) this summer.
Mullins has developed a strong relationship with Spartan secondary coach Blue Adams, which dates back to Adams’ time at Oregon State. Mullins was one of the first 2025 recruits to receive an offer from Michigan State’s new staff after they arrived in East Lansing.
He has also developed a strong relationship with Spartan cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin.
“I really had a great visit,” Mullins told SpartanMag after his unofficial visit in April. “Ever since I have met their coaches, they have made me feel like a number one priority. I feel wanted, not just needed. I talk to coach Blue, coach Meat, and coach Austin (D’Armound). We always talk.
“I wanted to come visit (Michigan State) because those coaches offered me when they were at Oregon State. Coach Martin, his first day on the job, he came and watched my basketball game. It has just felt like they’ve wanted me ever since.”
During Mullins’ unofficial visit, Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi pulled him aside to teach him more about Michigan State’s defensive scheme.
“Coach Rossi sat down with me. That was my first time meeting him,” Mullins said. “I liked it because he pulled me aside. We went into the room and he asked me which coverages I like to play in and he let me know that they run them there. They like my length, my speed and my ball skills.”
DB Gerritt Kemp (June 21-23)
Michigan State will host Dracula (Ga.) Hebron Christian Academy defensive back Gerritt Kemp during the last official visit weekend of June. Adams and Martin offered Kemp (6-3, 180) in March.
Kemp holds additional offers from Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Mississippi and North Carolina State, among others. He told SpartanMag that he will also take official visits to Mississippi (May 31), Duke (June 7) and North Carolina State (June 14) this summer.
Kemp, a three-star, is the No. 835 overall recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the No. 50 athlete and the No. 78 recruit from Georgia in his class.
DL Quante Gillians (June 21-23)
Rochester (N.Y.) Aquinas Institute defensive end Quante Gillians will join Kemp in East Lansing during the June 21 weekend. Michigan State defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa offered Gillians (6-4, 240) on April 1.
Gillians will also take official visits to Boston College (May 31) and Pittsburgh (June 13) this summer. On3 has yet to rank Gillians. He holds additional offers from Boston College, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Georgia Tech and West Virginia, among others.
Gillians told SpartanMag’s Kenny Jordan that Suiaunoa has remained in regular contact throughout his recruitment.
“I remember when he first offered me on FaceTime and my grandma walked in the door and was so excited,” Gillians said. “She talked to him and thought very highly of him. Since then, we’ve been texting regularly and FaceTiming here and there, so it’s been fun building the relationship with him.”
Gillians has yet to set a commitment date. The relationship between Michigan State’s staff and Gillians and his family could play a big role come decision time.
“I’m going to take some visits and see where we’re at with them,” Gillians said. “I want to really make sure it’s a place I want to be and have my grandma’s blessing from the school to the football team.”
