In another initiative to bring more eyeballs to the New York Liberty, the team is launching a new streaming service. Sunday night at Barclays and another big win for the 7-2 New York Liberty as they rolled over the Indiana Fever and held Caitlin Clark to a season-low three points. But the biggest number of the night might have been 17,401 fans who showed, another sellout for the Libs as the WNBA Moment continues.
Indeed the Liberty season keeps setting records. On opening night at Barclays, also vs. the Fever, the Libs became the first WNBA club to surpass $2 million in gate receipts and their national TV audience of 17.4 million that night was bigger — by nearly three million — than any Brooklyn Nets game since 2022!
So if you’re ownership it’s a good time to capitalize on your success and the Libs are doing just that by launching their own streaming service, Liberty Live, at $4.99 a month. It will debut Tuesday night
The service will supplement the free over-the-air broadcasts of Liberty games on My9, WWOR, but will allow subscribers to watch games on mobile devices. In addition, subscribers will be able view games when outside the New York market. Subscribers however must first prove they live in the New York area before they can sign up. The coverage area includes New York State as well as parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. However, 19 nationally televised games, nearly half the Liberty’s remaining schedule, will be blacked out on the platform.
In addition, the Liberty is launching a new fan loyalty program through the team’s newly revamped app, accruing points for taking part in activities like attending games, tuning into broadcasts, reading web articles, watching highlight videos and more. Members can then redeem points earned in the app for merchandise, autographed memorabilia, and tickets to upcoming games and other Barclays Center events. In addition to purchasing and managing tickets, fans can also shop player collections and purchase merchandise directly within the app. Additionally, fans can create unique profiles, customize preferences including their favorite players, and hide game scores to avoid real-time spoilers.
Clara Wu Tsai, the Liberty co-governor, has said that expanding the Liberty’s TV reach is crucial to both the Liberty and WNBA’s sustained economic success.
“For the Liberty when we first bought the team and moved them to Barclays Center, one of our original goals was to really broaden the fan base, really reach as many New Yorkers as possible” said Wu Tsai at the time the My9 deal was announced in March . “From the early days, those were the goals to make it easy for fans to discover us, be able to watch our games.”
