What’s next for LSU WR recruiting following loss of Five-Star Plus+ Dakorien Moore
LSU was dealt a massive recruiting blow last week, as Duncanville (Texas) Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Dakorien Moore backed off his pledge to the Tigers.
The top-ranked receiver in the 2025 cycle, Moore was one of three five-stars in the mix for Brian Kelly and his staff in Baton Rouge. Now, he’s lined up official visits to Ohio State, Texas and Oregon, likely leaving LSU by the wayside.
While Moore was pledged to the Tigers since last summer, he made it clear that he was still going to entertain other programs. His initial commitment to LSU back in August was an unexpected move in the first place.
“I think this is one thing that a lot of LSU fans — who are being reasonable about it — thought could happen at some point. He was saying ‘I’m locked in,’ all of these things, but let’s go back to when he committed in August, it was a shock, right? Texas was considered the team to beat,” LSU insider Shea Dixon said on ‘The Inside Scoop’.
The loss of Moore is obviously a setback for LSU, but it still currently owns the No. 2 class in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. It’s hard to fill a hole left by a top-three overall prospect, but producing top-notch wideouts has also never been an issue on The Bayou. Dixon sees the Tigers rebounding from the loss well.
“For Moore, I think it came down to he took a wave of visits recently…even though he was saying he was fully committed, he dropped a new top four. We saw this coming. For LSU fans, I think that the good news is this happens now and not the night before signing day,” Dixon said.
“You talk about gut punches, it is one. He’s the best receiver in this class without a doubt. That’s why he’s ranked No. 1. But the other side of the coin here is LSU never struggles at receiver, that’s one position they will always churn guys out, including two first-round picks this year. Then you look forward into this class, they’ve been on a lot of guys beyond Dakorien Moore — and have TaRon Francis, the No. 1 receiver in Louisiana, already committed.”
Who’s atop LSU’s WR board?
Of the 11 commits in LSU’s class, Francis, a four-star WR out of New Orleans, is now the lone receiver in the fold. The Tigers big board doesn’t change all that much with Moore currently no longer in the equation.
Four names currently stand out as top targets at the position for Kelly, WRs coach Cortez Hankton and LSU: Sachse (Texas) five-star Kaliq Lockett, Jacksonville Mandarin five-star Jaime Ffrench, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman four-star Derek Meadows and Milton (Ga.) four-star CJ Wiley.
“These are four guys that have been really consistently recruited by LSU. Derek Meadows is a guy that’s kind of popped up late, setting a visit when he’s already had a number of others planned, but those are four big names,” Dixon said.
Connections have been built with each of the receivers, all of whom will likely return to campus this summer. While the Tigers aren’t currently trending for any in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Dixon sees LSU as firmly in the mix in each recruitment.
“Guys like Wiley — who’s an LSU legacy, Lockett — who’s out of East Texas and then Jaime Ffrench — a one-time Bama commit, have all visited campus multiple times. They’re in deep in those recruitments and that’s why they got these official visits,” he said.
“I think just because of location and connections, guys like Lockett and then Wiley are two that I would put up there as having a very good shot with.”
