The cast of Coronation Street have paid tribute to Rob Burrow following his death aged 41.
Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease two years after his retirement from rugby league in 2019.
He was also known for his incredible charity work with the former scrum-half and hooker handed an MBE in 2021, which was upgraded to a CBE earlier this year.
‘It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved son, husband, father, brother and friend,’ the Burrow family said in a statement.
‘Rob has always been a true inspiration throughout his life whether that was on the rugby league field or during his battle with MND (motor neurone disease).
‘He never allowed others to define what he could achieve and believed in his own ability to do more. The outpouring of love and support that Rob and the whole Burrow family have received over the last four-and-a-half years meant so much to Rob. In particular, the rugby league family and the MND community have rallied around Rob to inspire him, thank you for your support.

The statement continued: ‘For those who knew Rob throughout his life, his determination and spirit in the face of MND over the last four-and-a-half years came as no surprise. Rob never accepted that he couldn’t do something, he just found his own way of doing it better than anyone else.
‘He will continue to inspire us all every day. In a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream.’
Two people who have joined the man paying tribute to Rob are Daniel Brocklebank and Peter Ash from Coronation Street.
Daniel and Peter play Billy Mayhew and Paul Foreman in the ITV soap. Last year, Rob Borrows and wife Lindsey paid a visit to the set to discuss Billy and Paul’s storyline, which sees the couple deal with Paul’s MND diagnosis.

Taking to Instagram, the Coronation Street account shared a wonderful picture of Rob and Lindsey alongside Peter and Daniel in Billy and Paul’s flat.
The caption read: ‘We are very sad to hear of the passing of Rugby league legend Rob Burrow. Rob was an inspiration to so many throughout his battle with Motor Neurone disease, raising both funds and awareness of this life limiting illness.
‘We had the pleasure of welcoming Rob and his wife Lindsey to the cobbles last year to meet Peter Ash and Dan Brocklebank and to discuss our MND storyline. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.’
What is Motor neurone disease?
Motor neurone disease (MND) is an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. It mainly impacts people in their 60s and 70s, but it can affect adults of all ages.
MND is caused by a problem with cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurones. Over time, these cells stop working, and the disease gets gradually worse - moving, swallowing and breathing get increasingly difficult.
Currently there is no cure for the disease, which shortens life expectancy and eventually, leads to death. Treatments do exist that mean some people can live with the condition for many years, including physiotherapy and a medicine called riluzole that can slightly slow down the progression of the condition.
In most cases, it is not hereditary, but having a close relative with motor neurone disease can sometimes mean you're more likely to get it.
The NHS lists the early symptoms as:
weakness in your ankle or leg – you might trip, or find it harder to climb stairs
slurred speech, which may develop into difficulty swallowing some foods
a weak grip – you might drop things, or find it hard to open jars or do up buttons
muscle cramps and twitches
weight loss – your arms or leg muscles may have become thinner over time
difficulty stopping yourself from crying or laughing in inappropriate situations
The NHS advises you to speak to your GP if you experience the symptoms. 'It's unlikely you have motor neurone disease, but getting a correct diagnosis as early as possible can help you get the care and support you need,' they state.
For more information and support you can contact the MND Association.
Daniel and Peter also took to Instagram to write their own messages. Peter said: ‘Such sad news today 💔 What a legend. Thoughts are with his beautiful family 🙏 Rest in peace, Rob Burrow’.
While Daniel wrote: ‘I’m absolutely devastated to hear that the legend and MND warrior Rob Burrow has passed today. I send love & positive vibes to Lindsey, Robs incredible wife & also their beautiful children. It’s been a privilege to get to know them over the last few years.
‘As an ambassador for the @mndassoc we’ll keep fighting. Together we WILL find a cure for this evil disease. Sleep easy Rob. ❤️’
Back in April 2023, Rob praised the ITV soap for raising awareness for motor neurone disease.
