Baltimore Orioles recall Norfolk’s Heston Kjerstad
NORFOLK — Heston Kjerstad took his lumps Sunday.
A day later, he received baseball’s ultimate painkiller.
Kjerstad, the fourth-ranked prospect in the Baltimore organization according to MLB.com, was recalled from the Norfolk Tides, the Orioles announced Monday.
Kjerstad, a 25-year-old outfielder, was batting .301 with 16 home runs and 58 RBIs through 56 games with the Tides. He’s tied for fourth in the International League in homers and is second in both slugging percentage (.601) and OPS (.998).
In a 7-6 loss Sunday at Lehigh Valley, Kjerstad was hit by pitches in three consecutive plate appearances. He was ejected in the third inning after protesting.
Monday’s call-up was the third of Kjerstad’s career. He played in 13 games for the Orioles last season and another seven this season, posting a .205 batting average, two homers and three RBIs.
Kjerstad, a 6-foot-3 native of Amarillo, Texas, was picked second overall in the 2020 draft out of the University of Arkansas.
