Her Best Friend’s Broke Boyfriend Gave Her An Expensive Birthday Present, And It Turns Out It’s A Family Heirloom He Stole From His Mom
When this 26-year-old woman celebrated her birthday recently, she was shocked to receive a wildly expensive gift from her best friend’s broke boyfriend.
At first, when she opened the present, she thought it was very thoughtful and seemed to be a nod to a trip she took to her mom’s country over the winter.
But after she spent a bit more time with the gift, she thought it seemed too high-end and inappropriate.
So she did a bit of digging on the internet and found out that it’s actually an antique worth thousands of dollars.
“Theories as to what happened included him not being aware of the item’s value, possibly having bought it from someone who didn’t know what they were selling, or him trying to somehow hurt his girlfriend/my friend and/or trying to hit on me in a bizarre, inappropriate way,” she explained.
“I ended up texting my friend and telling her that I had researched the gift and discovered it was worth a very inappropriate amount of money. She was VERY surprised by the entire situation, especially considering her boyfriend (now ex, but more on that later) is perpetually broke and makes her foot the bill for their shared lifestyle.”
“She came over to my place and together, we called him on speakerphone, where she demanded some answers. Long story short: He STOLE it. From his OWN MOTHER.”
Her best friend’s boyfriend didn’t answer all of their questions, but they were able to get enough information out of him to figure out what exactly happened.
On the night of her birthday party, her best friend was running behind, so she told her boyfriend they would need to go separately.

Her best friend then asked her boyfriend to drop by a local bookshop on his way over and get a book they had wanted to get her for a gift.
However, her best friend’s boyfriend decided against this and simply grabbed a random object from his mom’s living room and threw it in a bag.
Her best friend’s boyfriend never asked his mom for permission, and he also had no clue that what he picked up was not only pretty, it was pretty valuable.
“This item had been passed down to his mother from her THREE-TIMES-GREAT-GRANDMOTHER,” she said.
“It had been in his family’s possession for literal centuries and was the ONLY tangible connection she (his mother) still had to her home country, which, incidentally, is also my mother’s homecountry – which he wasn’t aware of, meaning that what I thought was a thoughtful connection to my trip there was a total coincidence! He had no idea of the item’s cultural significance.”
“My friend immediately made him call his mum to fess up to the entire situation. His mother had been running herself ragged trying to figure out where this item disappeared to for DAYS. Obviously, she never suspected thievery and was blaming herself terribly for having lost something this important.”
Her best friend’s boyfriend tried to get her best friend to agree not to call his mom since he didn’t want to own up to the theft.
Earlier today, the mom of her best friend’s boyfriend arrived at her home to collect her family heirloom.
She apologized profusely to the poor woman for not growing suspicious of the gift sooner, which would have saved her a lot of heartache.
She wound up having a nice chat with this woman about the heritage they share, and she reassured her she took great care of her family heirloom while it was mistakenly in her possession.
They hugged goodbye, but not before this woman admitted to her that the value of the heirloom was far more than she had anticipated.
In the end, it all worked out, and her best friend did dump her boyfriend over the whole situation.
“Lessons learned: Google suspicious gifts, and lock away your sentimentals/valuables when people you’re not entirely sure about come over. The GALL of this man,” she concluded.
