4-star F Cam Ward discusses Florida State, Notre Dame officials; updates recruitment with Penn State and Marquette
Cam Ward is On3’s No. 48 overall player in the current 2025 On3 150. The 6-foot-7 forward earned Maryland’s Gatorade State Player of the Year honors at Upper Marlboro (MD) Largo High after winning a state championship. He averaged 26 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 2.7 steals this high school season.
“My game is all-around, whatever it takes to win,” Ward told On3. “I’m on the floor, I’m going to get every rebound. I’ll make shots for my team and help everyone come together to get wins. Everything is coming off the dribble for me, that is a big development in my game. I’m able to make the game easier. I watch a lot of Jaden McDaniels, how he plays on the ball defense.”
Playing with Team Durant on Nike’s EYBL Circuit this summer, Ward is leading the way averaging 15.6 points and 4.6 rebounds. On3 was able to catch up with four-star Cam Ward after a recent live viewing to talk about his recruitment.
“I’ve been on two official visits, ” Ward said. “I visited Notre Dame and Florida State, so far.”
Ward breaks down Notre Dame and Florida State
NOTRE DAME: “They’re very family-oriented with Coach (Micah) Shrewsberry. He is my guy, he watched me all through the live period. He’s just trying to build the program, get his guys to build. They have some good incoming freshmen coming in and they have a lot returning from last year. So I am looking forward to seeing them this year and what he is able to create.
“Our relationship continues to grow. They text me almost once a week, and they call me a lot to. They’ve come to my high school at least four times. Coach Shrewsberry has been recruiting me since he was at Penn State, so it has been an ongoing relationship for a couple of years now.”
FLORIDA STATE: “Leonard Hamilton can coach his tail off. Coach Ham, that is my guy, he can coach like crazy. He gets a lot of guys into the league, a lot of guys like me. Tall wings who are athletic and lanky, he gets them into the league. That is the main thing that I took from the visit.
Cam Ward talks recruitment
“I have an official visit set with Marquette on June 25-27 and then I’ll go see Penn State in August,” Ward said.
MARQUETTE: “Coach Shaka Smart, me and him, I mean we match energy, and that stands out. That guy is crazy, you know, but I would love to play for a coach like that. With them, it is very family-oriented. They play so hard and they win games. And all of that is what I like to see.”
PENN STATE: “Coach (Mike) Rhoades and Coach (Jamal) Brunt have been mainly supportive over everything. I know they just guy there, but I think they can switch a lot of things around as far as their style of play coming over from VCU. I think what they do will translate well, especially with how he coaches.”
“I’m hearing a lot from USC and Oregon as far as schools who haven’t offered,” Ward said.
In his words
“I’ll probably look to cut my list and narrow things down after AAU ends,” Ward said. “And I’d like to commit before or at the beginning of my high school season.
“I’ll be looking at what is the best for me,” Cam Ward said. “The best for my growth as a person and a player, and the best situation to get me to the next level the fastest. Whether I’m in school for one year, two years, or four, it doesn’t matter. As long as I’m somewhere I want to be and I’m with a coaching staff that is going to help us reach our goals, that is where I want to be.”
