Which brings us to our annual series breaking down the top 50 players on the current roster. As we go along on this list you’ll get an idea of the overall depth of talent on Mario Cristobal’s team this year as he seeks Miami’s second 10-win season in the last two decades.
Today we are at No. 8:
NO. 8 OL FRANCIS MAUIGOA
Why He’s No. 8
Mauigoa arrived at Miami as a 5-star true freshman in 2022 and quickly lived up to his billing. He came in and was the starting right tackle, quite an achievement for a first year guy. Mauigoa helped the Miami offensive line improve tremendously from a rough 2023 season, and per Pro Football Focus he graded out at 70.1 percent overall (fourth-best of all college freshmen) with a 64.8 pass block grade and 70.7 run block grade (in 866 reps). His overall grade was third-best of the starters on the line, trailing Matt Lee (79.0 grade) and Jalen Rivers (74.1). A 6-6, 315-pounder, Mauigoa arrived at Miami with offers from pretty much every top program in the nation out of Bradenton IMG Academy. His potential is off the charts, and the NFL certainly seems to be in his future, perhaps as a high draft pick.
What he needs to do to move up this list
Just keep progressing. Mauigoa had a solid first year for a true freshman starting at right tackle, but he still has plenty of room to grow. He was out this spring coming off injury so we’ll see this fall what kind of strides he’s made. There’s a chance he could also play guard this season depending on who winds up as the fifth starter and what the best starting five combination is. The bottom line: The sky is the limit for this former 5-star signee who is well on his way to living up to his lofty billing.
Realistic season objective
Mauigoa will start somewhere on the line and should be better for his experience as a true freshman. If Samson Okunlola is the fifth starter (joining Mauigoa, Jalen Rivers, Anez Cooper and Zach Carpenter), then coaches have to figure out if the team is better served with Okunlola at RT or LG (with left guard the lone open spot being battled for on the line right now), or if Mauigoa fits better at tackle or guard. If it’s Markel Bell that emerges this fall then look for Mauigoa to move to guard, since Bell is purely a tackle (both Okunlola and Mauigoa can play guard or tackle). And if it’s Matthew McCoy that wins out, then he’ll be at left guard and Mauigoa will stay at right tackle. So it will be interesting to see how things shake out this fall.
