Monday’s Dawg Biscuits: Updates on 2025 prospects Tyler Lockhart, Ferzell Shepard and transfer targets
Step inside for the latest on several 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football along with transfer targets and team news:
First Biscuit – Starting the day with basketball and the transfer portal, Mississippi State had a successful weekend with another transfer addition in former Georgia transfer wing RJ Melendez, who officially visited State on Friday-Saturday and announced his commitment on Saturday. At that position, Mississippi State is still expecting to get a visit from UNC-Wilmington transfer wing Trazarien White, who officially visited Texas Tech last weekend and is finishing up an official visit to TCU later today. White has an official visit to State set for this coming Thursday-Friday and has also noted of his plans to possibly officially visit Kansas State although no date has been set for that just yet. Over the weekend I also checked on Vanderbilt transfer center Ven-Allen Lubin and still kind of quiet on that front as far as scheduling any official visits. Lubin entered the portal just hours before it closed last week and sources continue to feel good about Mississippi State’s chances with him. Not sure yet who else is involved with Lubin outside of hearing TCU, which I heard last week but have not heard much about TCU lately.
Second Biscuit – Staying with the transfer portal but moving to football, as you saw Mississippi State hosted several transfers over the weekend, including New Mexico State receiver Trent Hudson, West Virginia cornerback Montre Miller and Michigan State defensive end Bai Jobe, who is being recruited as a jack linebacker by Mississippi State. Of course, Hudson committed to Mississippi State and barring any major surprises, that probably closes the door on offensive additions for the Bulldogs from the transfer portal in this cycle. Per sources, Miller also had a positive visit to Starkville and we will see what comes of that visit in the next 24 or so hours. However, Indiana transfer cornerback Kobee Minor officially visited Mississippi State on Sunday and leaves that visit later today, which is something to keep an eye on moving forward. So far, not much has been said from Jobe’s visit to State and he has kept a low profile with his visits and process at this point.
Third Biscuit – Moving to football recruiting in the prep ranks, over the weekend I exchanged messages with 2025 linebacker and On3 four-star prospect Tyler Lockhart of Winona High School, and also talked to a couple of sources about Lockhart. He has official visits set for Auburn (June 14th) and Mississippi State (June 21) this summer and is not sure yet if he will add any more official visits. I would not be surprised if he does add more visits, especially with several SEC programs chasing Lockhart. He continues to say that his college decision will likely happen in August and he wants to make that decision before his senior season begins at Winona. As it’s been for months, Mississippi State remains in good shape with Lockhart and the Bulldogs continue to be on top of his favorites’ list.
Fourth Biscuit – Over the weekend I talked more with 2025 receiver and On3 three-star prospect Ferzell Shepard of Scotlandville (La.) Magnet School, who holds Power 5 offers from Mississippi State, Arkansas and Texas Tech and that list will keep growing this offseason. As noted, Shepard got his State offer last week when receivers coach Chad Bumphis visited his school and Shepard has an official visit set for Mississippi State on June 21-23. Shepard added that he does know a good bit about Mississippi State’s program and believes he could be a good fit in Jeff Lebby’s offense due to his abilities and playing style at receiver. Shepard mentioned that his college decision could happen in September and he just wants to find the right school to call home. For now, he does not have any favorites and wants to see what transpires in the coming months.
Fifth Biscuit – Also over the weekend, I exchanged messages with 2025 safety and On3 four-star prospect Ladarian Clardy of Escambia (Fla.) High School, who has taken in several unofficial visits this spring and that includes a trip to Mississippi State. Clardy officially visited Washington over the weeked with remaining official visits this summer to UCF, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State (June 14-16), and he added that he wants to also set up official visits to Georgia and Ole Miss during the summer period. Clardy is also still planning to make his college decision in July but has not set the exact date just yet. He wants to finish out his official visits’ tour before setting that date and noted that his official visits will be very important when it comes to evaluating his college future.
And for the gravy on top – And lastly over the weekend, I talked with 2025 linebacker prospect Lakendrick James of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. After not being able to take any spring visits, James plans to see Mississippi State and Ole Miss this summer and both instate SEC programs have offered him. He is wrapping up spring ball soon and said his biggest goal is to keep getting stronger so he can handle his own off the edge at jack linebacker. He noted of his good relationship with defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler and said he believes he fits Hutzler’s defensive scheme at jack linebacker, adding that it is similar to what he plays now at CoLin. James does not have a decision timeframe yet but continues to have State on top of his favorites’ list.
