The original Football Manager is coming back on Steam: "Say goodbye to your family"

With Football Manager 2025's unexpected cancellation, FM fans have been clamouring for a fresh FM experience.Between FM24 challenge saves, database updates and more, the days until we hear further news about FM26 just seem to drag on and on.Thankfully, our prayers have been answered (kind of), as a Football Manager game is set to release on Steam in a few weeks' time – and no, it isn't that one.Kevin Toms Football Star Manager is a faithful remake of the original 1982 Football Manager game.Developed by the main man Kevin Toms himself, it's the game that started off the Football Management sim genre as a whole, first hitting ZX Spectrums everywhere over 40 years ago.
The game was a hit, selling more than half a million copies in its first six years, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that without this game, we may never have got the mammoth Football Manager series of today that we all know and love. The PC port of Kevin Toms Football Star Manager comes nine years after Toms first returned to the series, releasing a mobile remake of the original game to very positive reviews, racking up 4.5 stars on both the App Store and Play Store. In a tongue-in-cheek trailer released to announce the PC port, Toms orders you to "say goodbye to your family" as you prepare to play "the original, the best, the only Football Star Manager coming this year!"

He also jokingly references the high PC specifications required to run modern Football Manager titles, noting that the game has been rebuilt "with absolutely none of the features you've come to expect from modern gaming, so forget about your graphics card".While it's probably unlikely to replace the now-ubiquitous Sports Interactive FM games, it may provide a nice stopgap for players while they wait for news on FM26.Since FM25's cancellation earlier this year, news on FM26 has been few and far between, although according to Sega financial reports, the game is supposedly still on track to release in 2025, as reported by YouTube channel FM Console.Kevin Toms isn't the only developer looking to challenge the football management status quo too.Sega is set to bring its legendary SakaTsuku series to the west for only the second time ever as Sega Football Club Champions, although we are yet to hear news on a release date.
