Marjorie Taylor Greene rages at “scary” drag queens lobbying Congress & demands “protection”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) lashed out at drag queens who lobbied Congress yesterday to support LGBTQ+ legislation, going so far as to call one drag queen a man pretending to be a woman even though the drag queen in question is not a man.
The queens – including Texas drag performer Brigitte Bandit and Drag Race alums Joey Jay and Jiggly Caliente – urged Congress to pass the Equality Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to federal civil rights legislation, and the Transgender Bill of Rights, which would add trans protections to federal laws. They met with several Democratic members of Congress, including out Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), as well as Virginia Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans.

“We already see so many attacks on our queer community,” she said. “I already don’t feel safe in my own hometown just dressed in drag like this. And it’s very scary for queer people to exist in a time where we see this kind of rhetoric being pushed by our lawmakers and the people who should care about other issues that actually affect the American people other than attacking our community, our LGBTQIA+ community.”
This set Greene off, who shared the clip on X and responded: “No, what’s scary is men pretending to be women reading gender cult lying books to our children, provocatively dancing nearly nude in public spaces, and taking over our bathrooms, sports, and private spaces.”
“Women and children need protection from them,” she wrote.

Brigitte Bandit, who uses she/they pronouns, is not a man; they are a nonbinary person who was assigned female at birth who performs in drag and are known for their political activism in Texas. Their dress with the names of the Uvalde school shooting victims got them kicked out of the Texas Capitol last year, and they are a plaintiff in the ACLU’s lawsuit against that law.
Greene was not one of the members of Congress that the drag queens spoke with yesterday, and Crockett was more welcoming of the queens.
“You’re ALWAYS welcome, queens!” she posted to X, sharing a picture of the queens in front of her office.

In the responses, while many of Greene’s supporters agreed with her, others mocked her fear of drag queens. Some pointed out that her boyfriend, conservative pundit Brian Glenn, has performed in drag in the past. Greene laughed off criticism of his drag last year.
